Steering Rack Percentages

Could somebody please explain the percentage system used to describe steering racks. Is there any way of identifying different racks? (Other than counting steering wheel revolutions!)

The different racks are different colours. I think black is the 8% (now standard) rack.

Caterham have supplied me with a black unit and advised on their paperwork 22%, should the correct rack be plain cast colour?

At a guess, the percentage is how much quicker the rack is than the standard rack - i.e. 8% is 8% quicker, 22% is 22% quicker.

 

My 8% rack was painted dark green, the 22% was bare ali.

 

According to the parts CD:

 

RH Drive, 8%, wide track - green

LH Drive, 8%, wide track - yellow

RH Drive, 22% - silver

LH Drive, 8% - blue

RH Drive, 8% - black

 

The 22% 'non-wide track' rack is also used for wide track with the addition of spacers.

Caterham tell me "All racks are now the same colour and can be identified by part numbers on the underside (hidden when installed) and dots of colour underneath the input pinion" Changes were carried out as a cost saving exercise. Spot on with the percentage thanks.
