Non se7en related car problem, noisey suspension when cold

We have an 05 plate 2ltr VW golf with 60K miles on the clock. Over about the past year or so it's developed a knocking noise from the front suspension when going over the not so smooth British roads. What puzzles me is that the noise only appears when the car is driven from cold and worse when the ambient temperature is low, the lower the temp the louder it becomes. After a short distance, say a couple of miles, when things have heated up, it sorts itself out and becomes quiet.

I've had it in for replacement shocks and upper mounts on the front, but sadly after £260 the noise is still there. I'm wondering if any other Blatchaters have had a similar problem and if yes, what was the cause. Alternatively, any other thoughts on areas to look at would be appreciated.

Thanks
