6-speed speedo drive, sealing

Spent a joyous afternoon wrestling with my car to get the 5-speed box out and get the new 6-speeder in. Had to change over the speedo drive, but can't help but feel that a little brass collar held in with a circlip is going to keep the oil from leaking out. Is there meant to be anything else in there to make a seal?

Don't think so and also don't think it's unusal for them to leak a bit..

There should be a black rubber seal around the speedo drive ,fitted before the brass collar and circlip.

 

 

It will still leak though !!!!

Not always - mine did on first build - a new seal cured it 5 years ago - no leaks since.

 

(and there is still oil in it!)

The 'box is weeping oil from the brass-hat area just sat on the garage floor, so i'll look for a seal before popping it in the car.

I had a leaky speedo drive, changing the oilseal did not cure the problem.

After dismantling and close inspection the metal sleeve on the plastic drive shaft was found to be slightly loose. This sleeve provides the hard polished surface for the oil seal to seal against. It should be tightly crimped on to the shaft. The oil was going under the sleeve and bypassing the seal. A previous owner had tried using silicon sealant around the oilseal which would never have worked.

A new shaft/gear cured the leak.

I solved mine by removing the drive, installing a blanking kit (standard Ford part I believe) & fitted an electronic speedo off the front wheel.
