6-speed speedo drive, sealing

Racingshoe

Recommended Posts

Spent a joyous *mad* afternoon wrestling with my car to get the 5-speed box out and get the new 6-speeder in. Had to change over the speedo drive, but can't help but feel that a little brass collar held in with a circlip is going to keep the oil from leaking out. Is there meant to be anything else in there to make a seal?

I had a leaky speedo drive, changing the oilseal did not cure the problem.

After dismantling and close inspection the metal sleeve on the plastic drive shaft was found to be slightly loose. This sleeve provides the hard polished surface for the oil seal to seal against. It should be tightly crimped on to the shaft. The oil was going under the sleeve and bypassing the seal. A previous owner had tried using silicon sealant around the oilseal which would never have worked.

A new shaft/gear cured the leak.
