K servies stater motor service

No Nuts

Recommended Posts

Just whipped the starter off my K series as it's getting a bit fussy when hot these days.

The plan is to give it a damn good clean and lube. I have no experience of starter motors at all but assume it is simply a basic DC motor.

Got the bendix (I understand that's what it's called) out (came out as a unit, was expecting springs 'n' bits to fly everywhere - whew!).

Took the end cap off (held on by two 8mm nuts) at opposite end to bendix.

However, neither of these approaches give me access to the commmutator / brushes which I now assume are at the bendix end of the motor. Is there any way to get to these? I don't want to just heave the rotor out as I fear the brushes will pop out leaving me unable to put the rotor back in.

Am I on a hiding to nothing or can someone please let me know the best way in to this thing?

TIA
