Oil pressure going up!?

After pulling in to work this afternoon I noticed the oil pressure starting to rise and it flickered around the 8 bar

mark. At around the same time the radiator fan came on.

Everything sounded healthy enough and there was plenty of

oil in the dry sump bell-housing. Is this a technical problem

which will allow me to drive home safely or could it be something more serious?

Did it go down again after the fan cut in? sounds like you might have a wiring problem and it's measuring the water temp?????

Sounds to me like the same. Apologies in advance if this is a daft question to you, but you do get an initial reading which is quite high from the engine cold - say around 4to5 bar ?

Wiring does sound the likely suspect. Check the earth under the dash (nearside I think). Do you have a dual use guage, utilising the oil pressure guage as an oil temp guage. If so, make sure you haven't knocked the switch onto oil temp reading.

Oh yeah, check the sender too, to eliminate that from the equation. They can be unreliable............

The sender works by running current through itself to earth. Higher pressure = less resistance. When fan came on did the vibration cause an area of poor wiring to short to earth (Chassis) if only quickly? This would give a full scale deflection!!!

Thanks for all your replies. It does appear to be the oil

pressure sender. Is this a specific Caterham part or a standard

VX one? (Car is 1993 VX 16V with dry sump by the way)
