xflow Alternator options

Recommended Posts

Now looking for my 3rd alternator since november!

had two cheaper ones with plastic regulator covers, not so cheap now!

Have seen mentions in the archieves to Daihaitsu replacements(on Vx's?)

what is my best option, preferably one that lasts in excess of 1000 miles!

current symptoms: Red light on, engine dies when lights switched on at idle, at higher revs no change in light brightness with revs(was probably before battery expired!)

thanks nick

Sounds like its dieing ....

I would be warey as it sounds like it may not be charging the battery much, and hence when the battery flattens it will stop!

I've been through a few alternators (2) in the last year - The daihaitsu ones are not cheap (£100) and they are apparently the same as the nipon denso ones which are sold as "competition" alternators due to thier size. I could be completely wrong on this, but I think Peter C will correct me!

Fitting ones of these may involve some electrical work as I think they may be slightly different, you would also need a new pully as the spindle diameter will be different.

You could refit an original one, but they are quite large and heavy and not cheap. But the pully will be the same.

I ended up comprimising and fitting an LRA127 (I think that number is right) which is from a Ford escort. Slightly smaller, slighlty lighter, but much cheaper. Needed a bit of fetling to fit and a new pully!

Your best bet is to talk to a Seven specialist like The Sevens Workshop or Blackbird motorsport as they are the experts and have more experience than me!

Mine says:

Valeo 292 7070

and has another number on it too:

9 AR2 707G

(14volt 45amp)

I got slightly better quotes from auto-parts depots and the like, but when it came to actually GETTING one, it was a different matter. Caterham had them on the shelf, complete with new pulley already mounted.
