murf99
Hi All Further to my dodgy gear stick question i am now thinking of changing to 5 speed Does 5 speed ( type 9 ? ) come with proper gear shift ? Gear box fitted is Escort casing with 4 speed with close ratio gear set ( BGH i think ) I am running 4.1 LSD so even with only 135 bhp it is nippy up to 90 but top speed is only about 105 mph So question is where is best place to buy c/r 5 speed box ? Thanks John
Sheds Moderator
Type 9 has decent (direct) shifter. Unless you get lucky with a CR box, get one out of a breaker Sierra/Granada and lob it at R&R transmission (other box rebuilders are available) who will recon it and fit the ratios of your choice for £500-600 depending on what you want. Graham Perry
I would Ring Phil Stewart at Road & Race in kent as suggested. He has been known to have them in stock occasionally that he has checked over. If I remember correctly it needs to be a V6 type 9 and not a 4 cylinder one if you are sourcing your own. Also with that low ratio diff you need to think very carefully about getting a higher ratio first gear inserted or bottom gear might be a bit too low with the standard ratio's I think Brent Chiswick also does a small kit of parts to help with converting a 4 speed car to 5 speed. Barry
IIRC the gear lever will now be further forward (to the extent that your hand may go under the dash when selecting R-1-3-5), and that you may need a new tunnel top to suit. As has been suggested, Brent has more info.
Nigel Riches
Hi Murf, I have a couple of pictures of my gearchange, from a 4 to a 5 speed, as Barry says you may be grappling under the dash for the gear lever, it uses the original bridge that carries the gear lever you have presently, with a shortened remote shift, Apparently Brent does a kit of bits to fit a five speeder, but that was after I got mine fixed by Arch Motors, blat mail me your home e mail and I'll flick the pics if you want. I.Mupferit
Yes I can provide a kit to carry out this conversion and although the gear lever is mounted further forward, it is in exactly the same position as if you had specified a 5 speed with the original build from the factory. Changing gear is no different..........just further forward. My kit does away with the existing gear lever bridge and remote linkage completely, just using the standard lever point which is so much more precise. If you are interested, the kit costs £45 all of which goes to NtL and after that you will need to get the propshaft shortened (address of a company to do this with the kit) including a new UJ spigot into the gearbox, a new speedo cable and 90 deg drive, a new clutch cable, new clutch driven plate and, of course, the gearbox itself (long input shaft) including bell housing and sandwich plate. You will also need to modify or, preferably, replace the removable aluminium top plate around the gear lever to suit the new lever position. The conversion involves cutting out the semi circular tube at the bottom of the tunnel and the tunnel floor to just behind (and including) the existing gearbox mount. The new bracket then rivets in place and includes the new gearbox mount. It really is quite an easy conversion. Look at Se7en-Ups site to see how we carried it out on his car about 3 years ago. I use these brackets as a fill in in my factory when we don't have much work but as we are super busy at the moment I couldn't produce another batch for probably about 3 months but could be a good winter project for you.
