What's a sensible Ampage rating for a replacement battery/FIA switch to solonoid cable?

I've used 27Amp which is the biggest gauge that Halfords sell - it's thicker than the original.

I think you're talking about a different cable to the one Shaun is talking about.

 

If you are talking about the main connection to carry the starter current, then a 16mm squared cable is fine for short runs, rated at 110 amps (the rating is for continuous use so for short runs it can deliver more current until it heats up). If the cable run length goes up, increase the size.

 

Mostly starting issues are to do with component condition rather than original specification. A 16mm squared cable in good condition will be better than a knackered 25mm squared.
