SLR 203BHP from Emerald

allegro

Recommended Posts

I've just had my SLR set up by Emerald and I'm happy as pig in SH*T. 203 BHP. Emerald 3D map with 4-2-1 collector and R500 silencer. No other mods.

Problem is the throttle pot has had it and it is impossible to drive. Has anyone got a spare they can sell/let me try. I am from wokingham so the nearer the better.

I can't tell you about the new EU3 loom. I'm sure that they would have a unit to suit. £500 for ecu + £110 rolling road + VAT. Do a search for Emerald, I'm sure telephone numbers will come up. Give them a ring.

Allegro, just make sure you get the same part no throttle pot, they may look the same but I've just spent a couple of hours looking at Beagles VHPD and I cant be sure they are now.

I dont think any attempt has ever been made to get the 190BHP VHPD engine fully emmision compliant (Lotus had a go for limited type approval on the 340R hence the drop to 178BHP). Just SVA (MOT std) compliant. So there isn't an EU2 or EU3 version.

They have evolved a little (changing throttle bodies either old dog leg manifold, new direct to head butterfly or even roller barrels on race engines). They all appear to be a bit hit and miss on the emmisions.

I dont think you'll have any problems putting an emerald ecu on your new car. Just begs they question why bother paying for the Rover MEMs 1.9 unit in the first place? Ask for it to be left off, pay for powdercoated black engine bay instead or some other toys?? Or how about fitting roller barrels from the start with a mappable MBE 967 ecu?? 200BHP instead of 192BHP. Then you have a factory looking engine bay, you can fine tune the engine with re timed cams without throwing anything away?? No need for Emerald and Caterham may be happy to sell it to you. Only downer is that MBE is a little harder to tune as people aren't as familiar with it.

Couple of words of caution:

- there are good and not so good VHPDs. I'm sure DaveW at Emerald can give you the variances, but they can be significant. So don't be too put out if your particular one can't make 203bhp...

- be careful with warranty. I would imagine Caterham might get edgy if you tinkered with the ECU and then had to claim.

- Emerald, sadly, only map their own ECUs now. They know their system, and non-Emerald ones can create headaches for them.

That said, the place who specialises in MBEs and helped Caterham map it originally for the R500 is, I believe, nr. Cheltenham. I think I have their details somewhere.

Aren't MBE 967s std. on new VHPD engines now because of Rover switching to EU3 engines?

Andy M.

Are you sure you haven't been overdoing the petrol sniffin' ?

I read this as "Allegro" had actually got 203BHP from his VHPD with all the trick bits (Damn; 1 BHP more than my homebuild 1800 with hydraulic cams, std 4-1 inc std silencer from the 1400 SS biggrin.gif).

I think that this is correct. He just wants to be able to drive it without the throttle pot 'acting' up. Yes?

Possibly, but...

I read it as a Allegro being (justifiably) thrilled with getting 203bhp out of a car that Caterham quote as giving 192bhp with just a change in ECU (and perhaps exhaust).

And then Julian seemed quite interested in making the same changes, I would have thought in the hope of gaining 11bhp?

Hence my comments. If Julian were to bolt on the same things, and "only" get 190-195bhp, say, is he going to be happy....?

All things are relative.

I might well be sniffin' the petrol next weekend as it's looking more likely that the car will be back on the road then (or soon after).

V7 showed 200bhp-dead after changing to M3DK and vernier pulleys set to 130/100 lift on overlap.

I also would like to report that I have reassembled V7's engine again after The Pope worked his magic on it. It fired straightaway (thanks to Mick Smith for coming all the way to Worcs to help with the final setting up) and then we set to changing the injectors to those suggested by Rob Walker (thanks Rob - took your advice in the end) for increased flow. Mick messed with the map and then we went for a quick run. I can happily report that V7 pulled strong from low revs. I didn't rev it hard. I want to spend a bit of time running it around and then mapping it at Emerald at the end of May.

Can't wait to see what power it makes. Should be about 400php (pub-talk horse power) I reckon.

Thanks for the help. Certainly it is great that my loom will be Emerald compatible! I was all excited about getting rid of the std ecu from new but as mentioned above, if my pistons come through the bonnet in the warranty period then I know what they'll say!!!!

I'd rather have the std ecu sat there "just in case...."

Bob,

Cheers mate - I went for the PC engine bay + interior in the end anyway! When you "delete" things, Caterham are, shall we say, conservative about values..... I reckon I'd have been hard pushed to get £200 off for the std ecu!

V7,what does your injection map look like up to the 3000rpm speed site?.I believe I have your original map which shows a sudden increase in fuelling at this point and the car drove accordingly ,misfiring until 3000 revs then taking off.I have smoothed out the kink at the 3000revs point which has helped a lot with the misfire but it still takes off at 3000 like a turbo has kicked in.

V7 was only really mapped quickly, for a power run to give me a "before" comparison to my my now rebuilt DVA-special, so it's possible that the low-revs injection map may be crap. This is something I aim to sort out on 25th May.

V7,I would be very interested to see your post 25th May map.If there's any chance of e-mailing it to me I would be most grateful.

I would recommend the emerald ECU to anyone, and for the record , Footman James don't seem to think it will affect my premium.
