SimonRHC
Has any one tried fitting fitting the "light weight" Ali- ciramic S1 Elise disks to a Seven? I think they are quite light and durable but may be the wrong diameter and use huge calipers. I think they were sintered Ali oxide back filled with Ali. Does any one know if there would be an advantage if they fitted, unsprung weight etc. the manufacture went bust but because they are so durable there may be a few sets in the scrap yards. I have often wondered. Cheers Simon
thinfourth
You need huge wheels (for a 7) to cover them and any sets that come up on fleabay get snapped up in an instant But there is some ceramic discs out there for bikes that are tiny which may be more intresting The happy handle made me do it here Click here to find 7s in their natural environment
oilyhands
They were metal matrix composite (MMC) and the company making them went bust a few years ago. Dave
Unclefester
Dave, someone told me at Pau-Arnos on Sunday that these discs are considered 'fragile'....is this right? I thought they were supposedly so tough they would outlast the car! Why did Lotus stop using them? Dickie Normuss
Why did Lotus stop using them? The supplier went out of business VX HPC - Loud and proud here Watch out, whatever hits the fan will not be distributed evenly

oilyhands
The disks had incredible wear properties and were more immune to overheating, but they were crap in the wet and had a tendency to shear from the centre bell. Oily
Unclefester
Thanks Oily. I knew "the manufacturer went bust", but that could have been either cause or effect of Lotus stopping using them..... Unclefester
If "Lotus stopped using them" only "a few years ago", then as the Elise stopped using them in about 1997 I'd say it's not impossible that Lotus stopped using hem for reasons other than unavailability.....but I don't have the dates, which is why I asked the question. Maybe being crap in the wet and breaking off from the centres may have some bearing on this....... Graham Perry
It was an interesting development though and I bet it gets resurrected at some point in the future
NeilC
I don't know if it will Graham, apparently the manufacturer went bust 😬

Colin Mill
Although they don't have the bling factor I think alloy brake components are a better area for weight reduction than much of the CF stuff we go for. I guess they aren't available for the 7 because not too many of us think the same. Has anyone weighed the four standard disks and calipers to see what we could save?
