Blade Runner
Silly question, how do you tell the difference between normal brake fluid and silicone........apart from reading the label on the bottle..? Trevor A PINK and Proud and LOUD

Sheds Moderator
Isn't Silicone a different colour or odour? Dot 3 and 4 are pretty distinctive smelling.
paul jacobs
I seem to remember that the silicon I once used was a purply colour, a bit like meths ....oh hang on, perhaps it was m e t h s........oh dear Paul J. Area Representative Crudders Posted May 9, 2007 Area Representative Share Posted May 9, 2007 Silicone I've used in the past has been opaque rather than translucent - couldn't say whether that is always the case though. Crudders
Blade Runner
Do any of you check your brake fluid Trevor PINK and Proud and LOUD
7 wonders of the world
silicone is non hygroscopic, making it ideal for older low mileage cars, however it also has a lower wet boil point compard with DOT 5.1. Too young to be old !
Blade Runner
Well it looks as if there is no definative means of telling the difference unless i risk stripping the beautiful pink paint of the car *eek* or trying to mix it with water...me thinks I'll try the latter. Mick Day
DOT 3.0, DOT 4.0 & DOT 5.1 are all regular brake fluids; DOT 5.0 is silicone based. Silicone fluid cannot be mixed with regular brake fluids. If in any doubt change the fluid & really this should be done every 2 years at least. Have a look here
Blade Runner
Mick Thankyou, an interesting read. It looks as if I should be changing the fluid anyway. Trevor PINK and Proud and LOUD
