MAK
A friend of mine Has a 1998 Passat TDI (I think 110BHP) which suffered a sudden failure of the auxilliary drive belts - I think the one driving the waterpump and the one driving A/C Power Steeering and Alternator. As it failed it got wrapped arround the Crank shaft pulley and locked the engine solid. it also managed to slip the cam belt one or two teeth without damaging the Cylinder head or valves. Upon inspection by a garage mechanic no obvious faults could be found eg siezed pulleys. All was replaced and the timing re-set. Car has been used for the next 8 weeks without problem but now its happened again. Has anyone suffered this or something similar? Do you have any ideas of the cause? Support Team c7trp Posted May 9, 2007 Support Team Share Posted May 9, 2007 Had this on one of our Passats. It was tracked down, eventually, to the alternator mounting being distorted, this inturn caused the tensioner mechanism to collapse.... Didn't manage to lock the engine / slip the cam belt on ours though.
Sheds Moderator
My Dad just had the aircon seize up on his old Omega with less catastrophic results but still a stalled engine.
