1.4-1.8k Alternator Swap

Hurtle

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have started doing the 1440 to 1800 upgrade, Swaping bits off the 1400 to 1800 k.

Do I need to swap the alternator? The 1400 has a narrower belt and a black plactic plug connector in into the back of it, which contains 2 large brown/red wires and a thin wire.

The 1800 Alternator has a wider belt, and a brass nut connection. The old loom (Elise) had 1 thick wire and 1 thin.

Do I?

1.swap the whole alternator? what do I do about the different pullies?

2. join the 2 brown red wires to the 1 connection on the 1800 alternator?

3. something else?

Cheers *wavey*

Jas.

When my car was converted from a 1.4 to 1.6 in 2000 I initially kept the old alternator, but it fouled the Apollo piping so swapped it for the later smaller alternator. I would think the 2 large brown/red wires are joined together & should go to the the battery live; the other (smaller) wire (Brown/Yellow) goes to the alternator warning light.

The 2 joined brown/red wires should go to the battery live terminal & generally do so by taking a tortuous long route around the engine. I removed all this & connected it directly to the big red wire on the starter (which is connected to the battery live anyway).
