stephen grant
Whilst my engine is out the car, thoughts turn to suitable upgrades.... The R500 lightened flywheel is an appealing idea and I know some folk on here have installed. My questions for the panel are as follows; 1. I've got a 1.6 SS, not a 1.8. Is this a non-starter? 2. The lightened flywheel is advertised as only compatible with the AP clutch. Whilst I don't object per se to buying a new clutch, there's nothing wrong with my existing one (the Rover clutch). Dave Andrews (who is working his magic on the engine) notes that the clutch diaphram bolts are of a different size (M7 on the Rover flywheel, M8 on the R500 flywheel). Has anyone reamed out the holes, or in some other way made the 1.6 Rover clutch fit the R500 flywheel? Or is this also a non-starter? Thanks in advance stephen
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted April 23, 2007 Leadership Team Share Posted April 23, 2007 I fitted a Helix clutch cover and AP plate to an R500 flywheel - all ok. IIRC the mounting bolts were the same as standard - ie. M7. Maybe they changed at some stage. Peter T
The R500 has M7 bolts. Not M8. R500 260 BHP Mango Madness CAR NO-
Geoff Dixon
Fitted an R500 flywheel and clutch to my 1.6 two years ago. No problems at all. Engine spins much faster, also loses speed much faster which is noticeable when changing gear as slight jerkiness. But takes off like a scalded cat. SimonMac
Hi Stephen, I have a lightened flywheel available from a late SLR if you're interested?
stephen grant
Hi Geoff, I take it that you fitted the AP clutch then? Did you investigate keeping/modifying the Rover item at the time? Simon - YHM regards, stephen
