johnthelearningworks.co.u
I have a 165bhp Roadsport SV with a 6-speed box. I love the car to pieces and would not wish for anything but a Seven. However, I wonder if I would not get up to 60mph quicker with an auto box which is standard on many up-market sports cars. Has anyone tried an auto box on a seven? Stationary M25 Traveller
Light the blue touch paper and retire .... ... simonbell
The only time I've heard the suggestion of an automatic being used in a 7 was a guy who has a V8 Westie and who had some work done on his leg I believe so changing gear gets uncomfortable when touring. There was a discussion about which box might be suitable on the WSCC forum but I think the general consensus that most would be too big to fit in the tunnel. Other than for medical reasons I can't see why you would want an automatic......it takes the fun out of driving in my opinion. Each to their own though Simon Bell - Caterham 7 Duratec R I`ve seen the future.....and it`s powered by duratec Check out the website here
Mick Day
It has been done on a certain series 1.....................& years later converted back to a manual. Although my tin-top is an auto a 7 needs a 4 (or 6) on the floor.
blade_runner
Sports cars that have an auto box usually have bucket loads of horse power, an auto box does suck a few hp from an engine, i'd rather have a manual and a few extra hp 😬 'Pinky Pics' here
John Ryan
Not sure the new DSG boxes are much inferior to a manual.
john aston
Sounds a great idea;but clearly needs to be complemented by aircon and traction control to make it into a proper sportscar.Better still go for the fullfat option of a Smart cabriolet, what a beast. Tre Zarcoff
With a modified 5 speed box, I can almost (if not actually) hit 60 in 1st.
johnthelearningworks.co.u
I don't think power is the problem. I have a 60bhp VW Polo with an auto box and it works very well.
MarcNS
Ford do a durashift which is an improvement on the Variomatic which used rubber bands 😬. This would probably fit in an SV, but most folk would do anything not to have to put an auto in a 7 There is the Tiger twin engined car which has an auto also. Alias
Not sure the new DSG boxes are much inferior to a manual. I suspect there might be a considerable (15Kg?) weight penalty for a DSG box. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 1800 Supersport with 6 gears and clamshell wings. blade_runner
Is a DSG an Auto or a semi auto 'Pinky Pics' here
JimB
DSG is "manual" with 2 clutches (one for 1st, 3rd, 5th, the other for 2nd, 4th, 6th) and gives almost instant smooth changes. Auto mode works really well (anyway it does in my diesel Audi) and I don't often bother with the paddle business. I suspect would not be easily adaptable to in-line engine, and probably too bulky and heavy for a 7. Jim
