Removal of surface staining on ally body

I need to remove 10 years worth of light corrosion/staining (resulting from occasional winter use, I suppose) from the ally bodywork, especially under the front clamshell wings, before trying to polish up the whole body with "Mothers" or whatever. I'm tempted to use very fine steel wool; has anyone got experience of this, or is there a better way?

i have used 1200 or1500 wet and dry paper to smooth out scratches then use your aly polish to buff up use water with paper go the same way all the time comes up like new
