GTD
My engine is an EU3 1.8 k series supersport (2002 car) with 52mm tb. However the ECU is from the original 1.6 engine. I'm not very technical, so apologies for lack of precision!! The MoT testers failed me on emissions, so we refitted the catalytic exhaust, but it is still failing. The garage I use is telling me that the engine is not running smoothly enough and at low revs is pumping too much fuel through, at higher revs they thnk is is running too lean. The head is absolutely standard from the original 1.6. Possible things I have thought about: 1. The fuel regulator is still the 1.6 version with a gentle squeeze - would the proper 1.8 be better? 2. Would a 1.8 ECU be better 3. Is there anything other than fit an Emerald to be done? here
fastlady
I'm in pretty much the same position (MoT failure only on emissions with standard 1.8K ECU, but DVA Power K13A upgrade - verniers, cams, 52mm throttle body on standard plenum) and would also appreciate the same advice. Would rather not spend out on an Emerald at precisely this moment, though it is in the plan sometime later in the year, but I would like to get it through an MoT before I miss too many blatting opportunities in the spring and summer! oilyhands
If you back off the cam timing and ensure the CAT is fitted and up to temperature then you should pass the MOT no problem. Oily
Dannyboy
I suspect I may have the same problems in the next couple of weeks ☹️ Dave...you set up my verniers....how far back roughtly should I retard the cam timing? And....any joy with KGM as yet? Dannyboy
Mark Durrant
Dannyboy I thought your car is pre August 98 and is therefore provided it was built as a kit it is a visible smoke test only Mark D Comp Sec
Peter Carmichael
GTD, I'm not a million miles away and I have a full Rover Testbook Lite setup, so we can interrogate the ECU and find out what is going on. Contact me by Blatmail.
Dannyboy
I thought that Mark. however the tester put in the chassis number last year and the computer required an emissions test! Dannyboy

Englishmaninwales
Danny The MOT tester is simply wrong for pre 98 car. Kenrick's Llangollen did mine last week and we had a discussion on this very subject. Smoke test regardless whether factory or kit built. Find another tester. henry21p
Mine passed its MOT a couple of days ago and is a December 1996 car and did not require an emissions test. The computer is wrong, not the tester.
Dannyboy
As Dave says, if the computer says it needs one then the MOT tester has to carry one out in order to pass the MOT...So, if requested this year we'll be on the phone to the DVLA! Pierre Gillet
Would an Emerald need the catalyst to pass the test ? Pierre
Ray Pearce
Yes - the cat would normally still be required to pass the emissions. Having said that, I managed to squeek past the limits without a cat on my car (Emerald/DTHTBs/ported/cams etc. 1.6K giving 170bhp) This year I refitted my old exhaust (with cat) and the tester said that my emissions reading was zero! Myles
I passed the test last year with a cat and a tweak to the Emerald. This year, I'm leaving the non-cat exhaust on 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7s Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com
