lardy40
Hi All Looking to retro fit an expantion tank to my X-flow, can anybody who has done this recommend a tank to fit, i would rather find a make now than rooting around a scrap yard also has anybody used these hose joiners were a hole is punched through the cooling hose the device is then pushed though the inside of the cooling hose and tightened to produce a tee connection, are they any good? will they take cooling system pressure? Many thanks
andy couchman
Think the Rover Metro tank is the one to go fo. You'll also need hoses and to change the thermostat housing. It might be easier to get a kit - I think James Whiting does one and the price is reasonable IIRC. Good luck - it sure makes a difference. wheely
Jorgen was kind enough to mail me his document. Just a point on the parts list. The header tank belongs to the wedge shaped 200/400 series rovers. C/Cars dont stock this item anymore. I got one from my local yard for £5. Its available from xpart dealers for £36. Mine had the usual brown sludge in there, cleaned up with hot water, a dishwasher tablet and some m6 nuts rattling around while i shuck it (the bottle)for half an hour. Looking at putting mine on the front cross member using the fan mounting studs. There is a thread from Graham Torbitt showing a tee into the cooling circuit with the bottle on the bulkhead but I am struggling a bit with pipework as my battery sits on top of the footwell making space a little tight. Feel free to get in touch if I can help.
Unclefester
I fitted one to replace the horrible thing which was on the Crossflow today, and used a VW Polo tank, which is very nice as it's spherical and has a huge fillercap, and a low water level sender switch. I fittted one first on our Twin Cam Lotus engined car, which had an overheating problem when I bought it. Works a treat and dirt cheap. The hose size is 16mm so I had to make an adaptor as the origianl tube from the T piece near the rad is 22mm.....so I bought a 22mm to 16mm brass plumbing reducer, soldered a piece of 16mm pipe on it. Need to return to the scrapyard to cut off a couple of Polo lowlevel senders still Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds..ooooh hooo hooo!!... 😬 😬Abbey Road Time-Machine *eek* Edited by - Unclefester on 25 Mar 2007 00:04:
Graham Torbitt
I cannot find the thread at the moment but here are the pictures of the header tank install when my car was still xflowed. Interestingly I was in the 7 workshop last week talking to Chris and noticed that he also puts the header tank high on the bulkhead above the passengers knees..... he says it's too low in the nose If you want any more picture blatmail me and I'll dig some out, I can probably find the notes I wrote for wheely somewhere given time..... visit Carrotland.co.uk
alan c
Graham I have been thinking of doing htis for a while where did you connect the return from the expansion tank? Is there space above the old style heater for the tank? The space above the passenger footwell is already full with a fuel pump and pressure regulator? Unclefester
Here's my Polo tank installation. The small pipe is to the thermostat housing, the large one to a T piece in the lower rad hose. There's no heater in the car and as it's now drysumped unless I put the battery under the carbs there's no way to fit the heater either. The Polo tank will fit with the heater, to the left end of the bulkhead. here here here Nice expansion flask as it has a very big filler cap and a lowlevel sender. Graham Perry
Mines pretty much the same as the pictures of Graham Torbetts with the return going into the heater circuit. I changed the Thermostat housing for the Escort Mk2 type with an elbow without the cap though. You can get those from Burtonpower
lardy40
Jorge sent me a photo of the Fiesta thermostat housing which has a small vent pipe on the top of it returning to the tank thus removing that air trap around the thermostat,Does the Escort mk2 have this small pipe? And yes looking at the Polo tank looks quite a nice fit ....off to the breakers yard!
Graham Perry
Yes, it is apparently the same as the Fiesta one. Having said that I think it is Fiesta XR2, the early crossflow version and not the smaller Valenca engine or the CVH. It does have the small bleed off pipe, and that is the one that you route to the header tank high point. I think there are two types, one with a bleed off pipe and one without so you would need to check if you were ordering one. Fitting a header tank is one of the best things that you can do with a crossflow. There is loads in the archive if you have a look, including an explanation from Roger King as to why its a good idea if I remember correctly Edited by - Graham Perry on 26 Mar 2007 09:17:
Nigel Riches
You'll also need the correct type of cap, with a two way valve, to allow expansion (into the tank) and subsequent contraction (back to the system) of the coolant. 1982. 5 speed, clamshells.
