Oil Sender

Is it normal for some oil to leak from the oil sender?

I usually get a solid 4 bar oil pressure under acceleration, however today the reading started to bounce between 1 and 2 bar.

On inspection the electrical connection to the oil pressure sender was covered in oil & winter grimme.

I plan to clean it up tommorrow and see if that fixes the problem.

The oil sender unit should not normally leak oil but he Rover units are of weak construction and can blow apart. I once had one fail in the outside lane of the M11 at a very silly speed and as the car in question was fitted with a safety interlock to the fuel pump, the engine stopped! Not to be recommended!

It might be an idea to change the unit as a precaution.

Chris - as Pete suggests, it may be prudent to change the sender, but I suspect that the cause of the oil leak may be one of the pipes which connect the anti cav tank to the sandwich plate. I have recently had this problem (as have most people with an anti cav tank) and they are a pig to fix. Suggest you monitor and if it turns out to be the problem, the only way seems to be to remove sandwich plate entirely and tighten (carefully) off the car using a vice.

Good luck.
