Right we know I'm a mechanical Numppty

and I know I will get flamed in Tech Talk but I have searched the archives and obviously have the wrong phrase

So

I go to Oulton Park (is that significant *confused*)

I drive round 75 times

I go home

On the Woodhead pass I stop for a pee in a lay by.

Big Redbutton does nowt , nothing not even a click I lift the bonnet and check batetery terminals , the batterry feels very hot (Never felt a hot battery before) *confused*

I notice I'm out of Fuel so stop at next garage, again nothing not even a click

I go out today to have a look at the wire I suspect has fallen off the solinoid

But I push the Red button for the hell of it...

ZeNA fires first time......

So what do I have to look at/look up in a search

If at first you don't succed Sky diving is not for you

How did it start after the pee stop (and I do hope that you didn't video the urination) ?

Mine does that. Fails to start when very hot.

Particularly after a couple of hours on the motorway.

Relay was dirty when James W looked at it, but also think the start gets unreliable (resistance change?) when hot.

Bloody annoying. I now park on hills where possible...

My ... Preciousss!

Check the wire feeding the solenoid.

It is probably fried. It May need to be replaced. If it does, feed it back round the rear of the solenoid to protect it from the heat.

May also be worth lubricating the solenoid, as it may be sticky.

*wavey* WIBBLE!

(Sorry, could not have a sensible post in the sheds!) *nono*

Jeez you lot are half asleep.

If the flamin car wouldn't start after Del stopped for a wazz, how then did he DRIVE IT TO THE GARAGE????

Ehhh??

No-one apart from me and Davis notice this slight logical inconsistency?

Are we to believe Del

Cagey,

Cheers, some investigations have been taken along a similar theory.

Apparently it is not unusual at all.

And as for how I got from woodhead to petrol station

A) its called a bump start

b) I do not know a flat bit of Woodhead so that was easy.

Now cadging a bump start in the garage was another issue

Are we to believe Del

A 'whiz' would have been spot-on though

Ahhh I would have had a whizz years ago, but I didn't have a mirror, it was windy..

and lets face it Speed was so Eighties 😬

And these days its hard to trust the supply, it gets cut with Drain Cleaner and everything these days 😬

? I thought it was all about "The Bonnie Prince" etc these days? Whizz = Bolivian Marching Powder/BMP....

I read a quite amusing book a while back called "White Powder, Green Light" which had more synonyms for "Chas" than I'd ever seen before, sadly I've forgotten most.

"Wazz" is french for recycled beer etc., the verbal form. 😬

[self consciously serious}Sounds like the ubiquitous K series hot starting problem to me. You don't need a push start, put it in gear and get someone with strong trousers to rock the car backwards and forwards. [/scs]

The new Vauxhall. Its headlights are shaped slightly different from the Nissan. Because you're slightly different.

Erm, but make sure the battery cutoff is in safe-mode. When I had hot-start problems, my starter once 'threw' and then jammed with the solenoid engaged - bypassing the normal starter circuits. Turning off the power via the ignition-switch (or key) didn't, therefore, stop it - and it ground forward into the back of my tintop - crunching the nose in the process.

I couldn't knock it out of gear either - only the FIA switch killed everything. I had to dip the clutch to release the two cars - the compression of the rear tintop bumper and the 7's nose put sufficient strain on the gearbox and drivetrain that the gearlever wouldn't shift.

Oh how I laughed *rolleyes* 😶‍🌫️

Delbert - As a numpty myself I have consulted my friend who is a mechanic and has a beard to proove it.

He says

If its just going click and not even attempting to turn over then could be the starter/ solenoid on the way out. The fact that the battery is hot could mean that the starter is shorting

Could be connections to starter/ solanoid

Could be the engine hasn't got a good earth - so you can check that.

Other hints included to check if it is the switch or gubbins from red button to battery:

1) Turn on car's ignition etc as if you were going to start it (not in gear)

2) Run a wire from +positive terminal to the terminal on the solanoid where the thin wire goes in (not the larger fat one).

3) If car starts...or tries to....then likely to be button/ wiring to battery.

Hope this helps...my advice is to use a spoon.

Del,

Just the usual hot start malarky, mine's doing the same at the moment. I've found that if you bang it in 6th and push it a couple of inches it'll turn on the key OK. If you think about it, the engine will always stop at the point of maximum compression, and when the engine is hot it takes maximum oompf from the battery to turn the engine at that point. If you rock the car past the max compression point it will make starting easier.

It's usually caused by a dirty or buggered relay that supplies the juice to the starter. I need to run another relay to the starter which should fix the problem.

Green Powder, White Light... by James Hawes, enjoyed this but felt left down when they tried to make a film from one of his other books, Rancid Aluminium, what a let down!

😬You laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at you because you're all the same. 😬
