Englishmaninwales
CC recommend using silicone for this, which I really don't fancy using *eek*. Will an anaerobic sealant be ok or Hylomar? Malcolm

TomB
Ive just used the Loctite anaerobic sealer - Loctite 573 or 574 I think. It was orange. Ive got to take the engine out to change the clutch ☹️
Rob Walker
Malcolm, The best stuff to use is the black RTV sealant that Ford use for the front timing cover on the Duratec engined mondeo 2003 onwards. Once cured it is unaffected by oil contact and will not break away inside your engine. Anaerobic selant will not be suitable as the mating faces do not mate close enough. If you really don`t want to use a RTV sealant then you could always use a cut down wet sump gasket, I have done this several times. Rob
Paul Deslandes
or Loctite 598 available from from Halfords. I think its the same as the black Ford sealant that Rob describes and is the same as the Vauxhall stuff. It stays soft and is impervious to oil, water etc, doesn't break off in lumps and threaten you oil ways and is easy to clean off when you have to take it apart again. Allen Payne
I'm throught Oilyhands used the same sealant on mine that you use on the cam carrier (and anaerobic sealant) - But given Rob's comment I could wrong.

Robster
Stag's wellseal..looks like it was made in the 50's..smells lovely and stays sticky so can't destroy an engine like silicone can do!!
prs
I gave up using loctite 574 as the mating surfaces weren't good enough. For the last 2yrs i've used a cut down version of the wet sump gasket, no leaks
Graham Perry
We use Wurth RTV sealant, for all uses where its likely to come into contact with fuel or oil but I think other companies sell it as well
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted February 23, 2007 Leadership Team Share Posted February 23, 2007 I've used Loctite 574 with no issues, but it may simply depend upon the individual installation? I did once upon a time use Hylomar on a wet sump pan - next time the sump was off it took me ages to pick errant bits of the stuff out of the pick-up gauze A lack of knowedge can be cheap, the results are often not!
