Nemo
I'm thinking of changing my existing standard size number plates for smaller 12" by 3" size plates. I realise that this size plate is not strictly speaking fully legal but WTF . Can anyone recommend a quality supplier in the Bristol area or alternatively a good on-line supplier 🤔 TIA I hope you're enjoying the ride....I am! 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬
GTD
Fancy Plates - based in Ireland, find them on the internet. They'll do self adhesive, smaller size etc. Lots of people use them. Who needed an LSD anyway?
Little Bob
As they are not actually legal, are small plates picked up during an MOT resulting in a fail? Has anyone been stopped by the BiB because of a small plate? 1.8 SuperSport
Dickie Normuss
I had one that size on my last 7, no idea how long it had been on before that. Passed the MOT fine and never stopped by the BiB, maybe I was just lucky? VX HPC - Loud and proud here Seek forgiveness, not permission. jd2
Another for FancyPlates, ordered mine on a Thursday evening and it arrived on the Saturday. The picture of the yellow 7 on this thread is a 3/4 size from them... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?p=5&f=65&t=339926&h=
Nemo
The 3/4 size jobbies in Redboy's pic are just the size I want. Just placed an order with Fancy Plates. Cheers chaps 😬 I hope you're enjoying the ride....I am! 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬 😬
Support Team Shaun_E Posted February 7, 2007 Support Team Share Posted February 7, 2007 Bizarrely, although the MOT does have a check for number plates, it doesn't include the size . Details here Yellow SL #

jd2
Hi Andy, I used several double sided weather proof sticky pads which felt fairly secure but also added two regular numberplate fixings with self tapping screws into the lower corners of the nosecone just incase! Cheers, John
Bertfatal
There are not as far as I can find out any legal requirements for the actual dimensions of the plate itself, only the letter and number sizes and spacing ( see the reply I had from the DVLA when I asked them). CUSTOMER REF : V266243 Thank you for your e-mail. There is no prescribed size for the number plate itself and all margin sizes quoted are minimum. All current character and spacing sizes are shown on the leaflet V796. There is a diagram available which is taken form the British Standard which illustrates the minimum and maximum sizes for the required details that have to be displayed on the number plate. I am afraid that I am unable to provide you with a complete copy of the British Standard due to copy-write laws; a copy can be purchased from the British Standards Institution, Customer Services, Sales Department, 389 Chiswick High Road, London W4 4AL. The number plate itself must be fixed and displayed so that in normal daylight the letters and figures are easily legible from every part of a "relevant area" as defined in Regulation 5 of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) regulations 2001. For the purpose of the regulations, "relevant area" means the area contained in a square described on the ground, in front of the vehicle (in the case of a registration mark on the front of a vehicle), where one corner of the square is below the middle of the registration mark and the diagonal of the square from that corner is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, but excluding any part of the square within 10 feet of the vehicle. The diagonal of the square governing the relevant area is 75 feet in respect of cars. If you would like to receive a copy of a diagram showing in more simplified terms the Agency's interpretation of these requirements and the diagram II referred to earlier, please forward me your address. Nemo
Hope you get yours as quick as mine. Ordered yesterday around midday - plates arrived in post today. Very quick service. Apothecary
Alternatively you can always cut down your standard size plate - just need to ensure you do not go below the minimum spacing requirements between letters and edge as per the Regs. ChrisHawkins
Or do what I am doing and download the font from here and have a play with sizes in Word or Visio as I did, print them out and try. mikevernontalktalk.net
Most local motor factors who supply number plates will also make them with the smaller motorbike sized digits, although they sometimes need a little persuasion to supply them for a car. Much cheaper than Fancy Plates!

Ian B
That definition of "a square described on the ground" is interesting - it makes no mention of at what height above the ground within this square the number plate must be readable from From that definition, as long as it can be read when lying on the ground in that square, it would appear to meet the requirement 😬 Ian - MI 5EVN - Slightly Vider SVelte model 😬 now repainted to match the Autocom headsets 😳
