Area Representative Richard Price Posted January 29, 2007 Area Representative Share Posted January 29, 2007 ChrisHawkins, But are these the std XR4i ratios and if so are they ok for a Zetec It depents what you mean by OK, and what you are comparing it to. The complaint that many people have of the standard 5 speed 'box, is that 1st gear is too low, and the spacing between the other ratios is too wide, with 5th being a relaxed cruising gear. In my opinion, the Caterham six speed 'box addresses all the problems of the 5 speed, but at a price! There are several improvements (altered ratio's) to the 5 speed, but none of them cheap. ChrisHawkins
Thanks Shaun! Richard, Sorry for being a little vague, but your answer is exactly what I meant. I have a 4 speed box at the moment which is noisy and leaking from all angles, so I need to do something about it. I have decided to change to a 5 speed but did not want to make the mistake of getting a box with ratios that were unsuitable. From what I understand the std 4 speed ratios are: Sport/Mexico (Caterham fitment): 1st 3.337 2nd 2.000 3rd 1.420 4th 1.000 from here which would mean the gap between 1st and 2nd on the 4 speed is less than that on the std 5 speed.
