Oil air separater

Recommended Posts

Aerated oil gets dropped into the top of a long, thin tank after it's done its thing through the internals (and become nicely fizzy).

Said tank has baffles in it through which the oil passes, removing the air in the process. A vent pipe (to the head) takes the air out of the tank.

A pipe at the bottom of the tank puts the oil back into the sump via the oil filter.

Something like that anyway.

Well, as far as I am aware the tank has no baffles fitted. The tank is circular with a conical top to it (hence the name 'Apollo' from its resemblance to the rocket).

Simple explanation.

There are two side mounted connections (one near the top and one at the bottom)and a smaller exit from the very top of the can. The top side entry has an internal vertical slot which induces a swirl in the oil that is being pumped to it from the sandwich plate connection. As the oil spins it seperates out the air (in an oil/air suspension) and that rises to bleed back through the very top fitting into the cam box cover via a feed pipe (actually a front hydraulic brake hose). The oil is then removed from the can from the lower fitting and should now be air free and returns to the other side of the sandwich plate etc etc..
