s7mon
I've, not surprisingly, just returned from a four week holiday to a flat battery on my 1.6 Superlight. Being relatively new to this game I haven't invested in any form of battery charger as yet. I read a couple of threads that suggested that Optimate is the answer ... http://www.optimate.co.uk Can anyone advise which model (if there are more than one) or Optimate I should get and whether they are available at Halfords or more specialist suppliers? Any help would be appreciated.
Support Team Shaun_E Posted January 18, 2007 Support Team Share Posted January 18, 2007 Not available at Halfords but some places sell them (e.g. Demon Tweeks) but I doubt you'll get cheaper than ordering direct. Do a Blatchat search as someone was organising bulk buys recently. I'm using the Optimate III which is fine on my 14Ah Red Top 15 but for the standard Banner battery (30Ah I think) you might want to get the Accumate as that is designed for batteries up to 75Ah (the Optimate is only rated for batteries up to 28Ah). In my opinion its a good piece of kit which "does what it says on the tin". Yellow SL #
Leadership Team SLR No.77 Posted January 18, 2007 Leadership Team Share Posted January 18, 2007 Optimates are available from Vehicle Wiring Products One owner has recently brought a Banner battery back to life using an Optimate - the battery was so knackered it took 3 days 😳 Very good piece of kit Stu. Beelzebub
Buy one. You won't be dissapointed. I leave mine connected to the car via a quick connect whenever it's in the garage. There are cheaper options but you'll get what you pay for. For Optimate
s7mon
Thanks guys As Shaun suggested, my battery has a rating of 30Ah and the Optimate III is rated to 28Ah. Should I plump for the higher rated Accumate charger or are people still using the Optimate with their 30 Ah batteries (as Stu suggested)? irrotational
there was a shop on flea bay which had banner batteries dry and sold the optimate spIII which is the lastest and greatest version... price seemed pretty good... here £30 plus £6 postage - seems good? --- this is a local sig for local people! Tre Zarcoff
Either will be fine if only using it on the 7 I like cream...
Whiz-kid
I have an Accumate so I can charge higher output batteries on my tin-tops if required. This also allows charging of 6v if needed (not sure if the Optimate does). I bought mine from www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk After shipping they were the cheapest I could find for the Accumate and their service was great - it arrived next day. s7mon
Thanks for all the info guys. It sounds as though either the Optimate or the Accumate would have done the job, but I've gone for the Accumate as it might come in handy for larger batteries in the future too. Thanks again.
