Oil for a zetec

Nic Day

Recommended Posts

A couple of Zetec oil questions

1 - I have a 2ltr Zetec with a dunnel Sump - any idea how much oil it will need to re fill it? doing my first oil change

2 - To change the oil (remember I have never done this before) drain oil, check!!! I guess remove filter - anything special?? (I am guessing this just unsrews?) to do this. Get new filter and replace, then fill back up with oil??? Have I missed anything major??

3 - which is the best / right oil for a zetec?

Cheers again!!!

Nic

i have one of those chain-oil-filter removal tools (grips the whole filter and unscrews it if stuck) if you need it

also i went to "builders beams" and have got what they *think* are steel 4mm by 16mm rivets!! They also had 12 or 14 length but i thought the longer the better!? then afterwards i thought - maybe its too long?

anyway i will bring them along next time i see you - see what you think

Andy - yes please!!!! and yes the longer the better!!!! we can try them and see how the fit

Mick already drained and back in !!!! but thanks for the advice

GTD - perfect web site - I thought the filter was hand tight, but just needed to double check

So now - how much oil is needed and what grade, from searching techtalk, seems the grade is between 5w 30 and 10w 40. Any advice??

Andy - good idea, but just added it to the big tray with all the other waste oil!!!!

Can I borrow your chain wrench please???

We will see how far the 5litres go and then see from there.

How did you get on with the rivets? get them in alright?

of course - borrow it whenever you want! have to take it out of the packet first 😳 not my fault! waiting for jack so i can get in there!

rivets and gun are still unused - royal mail let me down and didnt deliver the poppers ☹️... so a job for one night this week with the civic acting as a mobile lighting rig...

starter is off and waiting for swmbo to vacate the house so i can tinker...(real pain to get off - extra long allen key with 8mm socket and extension on the short end plus scraped knuckles was the only way)

meanwhile the holes in the bathroom wall have been filled, a colour selected and painting is due to commence! *eek*

Nic, have you done it yet? I've the same sump as you and was told by the Dunnell people that it takes the full 5 litres as per a mondeo *thumbup*

One thing to remember is to really crank the filter on tight, none of this namby pamby nonsense - I lost one down the back straight at Silverstone, a very expensive business... Mine is now lockwired in place!

Hi JaseB which filter do you use because I have never had a problem with my filter I use the fiesta Zetec filter and I have cranked the steering rack a little to clear it which is ok because its go a UJ at the rack end, some one did surgest a Renualt filter and when I started the engine it bluw off *confused* so I don't think the threads are the same Regards Paul

Hi Nic,

I fill mine wth 3.5L and have never had any issues even when on track. As for oil I use Mobil 1 5W40 although some say you should use 5W30 or 10W30 to keep the hydraulic tappets happy.

Paul, does yours really take 5L, I dont see how it can as the lowline sump has a big lump chopped off the bottom *eek*

Jase - cheers mate - the oil has been draining today!!! family got in the way of my garage time!!!

I am planning on borrowing a chain wrench from irrotaitional to get it off. I was planning on buying 5 litres of 10w40 - seems the best from searching techtalk - but still open to discussions. I will and have read about the zetec flying filters so yes it will be tight (how did you lockwire it?) And what filter did you get, I am guessing the one from a mondeo.

Martin - I will start with 3.5ltr and then check!!! see what happens

GJT - sorry!!! kids bothering me

Hi Martin Thanks mate but I will stick with what I know is a good filter that do's not undo its self, there has been so many post on Zetec filters coming undone all I do is tighten it hand tight and it never comes undone, If you are ever in North Wales I will show you it fits just under the steering shaft with about 1/4" clearance as for the 5 litre sump I have bought a Raceline sump £359 and it holds 5 litres its a thing of beauty all baffulled to provent oil serge on fast corners 😬, the local tiger dealer offered me a Mondao sump with a lump chopped off it and a plate welded on the bottom and it only held 3.5 litres so I declined his offer Best Regards Paul

Ok

Just spoken to Chris from the 7 workshop and he has always used 5w40 in my car and I have never had a problem - So I will stay with that.

As for filters, I will have to take mine off and measure it against a new one!!! - Jase I am going to put a jublie clip round it and do you just cable tie it to something nearby?

Oil filters seal with the rubber seal and provided this is compressed *enough* nothing will be gained by pulverising it into oblivion when tightening the filter. Indeed you may damage the rubber seal - I have seen this happen in food factories handling liquid products and relying on compression seals.

Do the thing up hand tight using a rag to get a decent grip on the thing. That's enough.

How *do* you lockwire a filter?

small spanner in the works now

was all settled for 5w40 but I have just been offered a very good deal on some Caterham 5w50 motorsport oil.

So whats the difference? (other than 10, but 10 what and will that 10 make a difference????)

I know nothing about what these numbers mean

So will this 5w50 be any good for my zetec HELPLLLPPPP PLEASE

Personally I wouldn't use 5W50 in a Zetec.

Basically the numbers refer to the thickness* of the oil. I think 5W50 may be a too thick*

(The number before the W refers to the thickness of the oil when cold)

10W/40 is recomended by Raceline and they know a thing or two about the Zetec engine.

Assuming that your engine is a "silver top", your Zetec will have hydraulic followers and these can be sensitive to the thickness of the oil used.

Ford recommend 15W30 for the Zetec.

This is a little too thin for use in a 7 as the engine will be (should be *smile*) working harder, revving higher and will naturally get a little hotter than it does in an escort/mondeo etc.

As a result the hot oil can get too thin and can "leak" out of the followers, leading to the car misfiring and losing power when hot. (been there - done that!)

However, some Zetec engines seem happy using this spec oil - maybe the owners are just not trying hard enough 😬

If Chris (7 workshop) says 5W40 and Pete (Raceline) says 10W40.

I'd stick to a 5 or 10W40 oil!

If you change your oil regularly, Comma do a 10W40 Semi synthetic oil for next to nothing (around £12 for 5 litres)

For the pedants, * is a simplification of the viscosity of the oil ect ect

Steve thankyou

Chris has always put in 5w40 and it has run with no problems at all, not using any oil, I have never needed to top it up and non in the breather tank.

10w40 - If my understanding is right will be thinker when cold - any benfits to this????

If I remember right 10w40 is cheaper!!!!!!!! I have found 5w40 at £30 for 5 ltrs and 10w40 was about £20!!!!!

So is there any advantage to thicker oil when cold then and both should be the same when hot

Still learning!!

To be honest I'm not really sure.

5W40 will give slightly better protection from start up (flow a little more easily) when cold but the 5W rating actually refers to the oils viscosity at temperatures below 0 degrees F.

If I was in your position, I'd go for the 10W40 as plenty of other people are using it with no problems.

However, if your feeling flush and want to keep usingf what was in before, then go with the 10W40

Either way I can't see you having any problems.

PS, while you were posting I did a quick search on Blatchat to see if there were any good explanations of the oil rating system. I know there are one or two but cant find them.

However I did find this which explains it all pretty well *thumbup*

I also found this which will confuse you and probably give you a bad headache! 😬
