X-flow running on...

As stated, I have a wee problem (not a 'wee' problem of the 'down below' variety, I might add...)

My 1340 stg2 Arrows x-flow is running on (yes it's not in a Lotii/Caterham so hurl abuse now!), but otherwise it's running very well!

It has a stg 2 head - flowed/big valve (not sure of sizes), 32 DFM carb with Pipercross filter, Sylva exhaust manifold (that gives it away!), Piper 285 cam, Piper Magnum distributor with Lumenition Magnetronic ignition, NGK BPR7E plugs (previously Champion RN9YCC) and has been doing it for about the last month. The ignition timing is set to 10 deg BTDC (ie standard for a 1300GT) and has been for the last 9 months! I've checked the valve clearances - all OK and it does not pink, whatever I do...

The choke is opening fully and I spent the other night thrashing it around to 7 grand+ to clear any signs of carbon (but then I would have expected it to pink).

I've fitted new exhaust gaskets since it started which have been trimmed to size, just in case it was these getting hot enough to cause the run-on.

Now I'm about stuck! Any more suggestions (except replace it for a ZX9-R - that's happening later....wink.gif).

Cooose,

When my (Neeb's) landrover did this years ago, the mechanic said it was running on oil fumes sucked up past the rings on the overrun and "deiseling", but he was crap so this is probably wrong.

Have you tried fiddling with the ignition timing? I know it's not been adjusted but maybe different fuel has made it worse.

I've still got some bottles of octane boosterwink.gif

Some cars have an "anti-run-on" solenoid which I think interupts the fuel supply to the main jet or similar. If fitted to your carb and accidentally disconnected this might be worth a look.

Have you tried covering some of the air filter to compensate for the cold at the mo, (and hence oxygen rich through more density), air causing lean running and hence higher combustion temps?

And most importantly.....Do the plugs taste of rich tea biscuitsquestion.gifwink.gif

Cheers matey - the plugs taste great! A bit well done ginger nut if anything!

It's reet bizarre, but I'm having other thoughts... I thought it started when I first fitted the Pipercross, but I think it began before then.

What I'm thinking is this... Bart used to splutter and cough when the fan came on, and I realised that the plug leads were touching the fan switch, and thus the current across the switch was causing some kind of interference. I re-routed the leads which solved that one! Now I'm wondering if something similar is occurring elsewhere? Am I clutching at straws?

I'm not sure about this dieseling malarky, but as it's a x-flow it burns oil of course! (show me one that doesn't...). And if it was a timing problem, or even an air density problem I would expect it to pink (not that there's anything wrong with pink!).

It has had a mixture of different brands of 4-star since it started, so I also doubt that it's fuel related, and being a DFM carb (MK1 Escort GT) it's waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too old for an anti-run on solenoid!

I might just put it down to dieseling and live with it! Or mebbe just try my old filter on again and see what happens... I would like to get it sorted as I don't really want it to go bang yet - I've got Brooklands on satdy and a sprint in April!

Anyone else got any ideas?

Mark,

Since you're the only one that's interested, I think I've pinpointed the fault... Even though previously the plugs were ginger nut, they're now undercooked shortbread! Bizarre, but mebbe not so...

I ended up buying that DGAV (which is actually 2-3mm/choke smaller than my DMF), but Mish warned me to check for play in the spindles, which mine appears to have gained! Luckily the DGAV is ok, and thus is now fastened in place. It's still running a bit lean, but not as badly... She'll be reet!

If it goes bang, it just means that the 12000 redline will appear sooner wink.gif
