Throttle Potentiometers

I think my "pot's" playing up. When I try to calibrate the M3D with the pot fitted to the car, I get a very small deflection on the Emerald display. If I remove the pot and cycle it thru 90^ with a screwdriver, I get a reading of about 1150 in the Emerald software (normal?). There is a tapered, black plastic, control box connected to the loom with two sockets, (normally mounted under the mems on a std car) what does this unit do? It seems to be making strange noises, like relays trying to hold, but not quite making it.

Any help would be appreciated.
