One is alleged to be made of a material found in abundance at Easter time.

A Rocket box is a 4 speed Ford fitment gearbox using dog engagement. Based on the pre-Type 9 box used in MK1 Escorts etc.

Thank you EFA *thumbup* I guess I never picked up on any of this, when I was a "Yoof", I wasn't one of the usual Ford Escort brigade *wink*

I was one of the "Vee Dub" crowd 😳 😬

Cheers,

Mick.

Edited to ask....was your comment about Easter refering to one of the boxes being lighter, or weaker?

I must have logged into the wrong forum *confused*

erm its even 0.07 apparently *eek* *confused*... I must keep this in mind at the next set of postings re: launching cars, ET's and reaction times at the fastest caterham of the world events.. (!)

Out of interest, I have it on good authority that Quaiffe will be showing their new 5 speed H pattern synchro gearbox at the Autosport show. It was commissioned by Raceline with the design brief of being able to cope with 300+ bhp but fitting into a 7 transmission tunnel in place of a Type 9.

I saw the early drawings of this 'box at Raceline over a year ago and it could be the answer for big power Duratecs etc whilst being user friendly on the road. *thumbup*

I looked at waiting for that box but according to Steve Perks, the price in the Quaife 07 catalogue is a misprint. Also, it's something I'd like to see get a couple of years of development put on it first.

Mmm....14kgs is quite a bit!

Reading between the lines.....Pro's & cons for both then.

The Elite is lighter, and has a slightly less chunky gearchange, but seems to be a bit fragile.

The Quaife has a slightly heavier change, is heavier, but again, reading between the lines, more reliable????

Absolutely! But what would you do?

Doh! nut! 😬

I think the problem with the Elite, is the flimsy gearchange mechanism? (Well it looks that way to me!) That would be where the weight saving is.

I'm only assuming mind you. As I said, reading between the lines, I haven't any experience with either *confused*

Which one are you using Davey?

Mick, Dave uses the Elite box.

The very early versions did have some problems with the gear change brackets but the newer versions that i have seen have addressed this problem and do not suffer anymore. *thumbup*

I will be waiting to hear some reviews of the new quaife box, also Phil at road and race trans will be offering something new, he is just test developing a new box in his Caterham that sounds rather nice. *thumbup*

Pete, You didn't see the box Dave 'Elite' Edmunds was using at Fastest Caterham then. Clearly it had the same problem as it has done every time I've seen his car on a drag strip. If Bubba's is OK then good on him,, but I would personally question the reliability. I think I am the only person with a Quaife in a Caterham (in normal use) who has had a problem with the sequential box, and mine was a very early one. Never failed since.

But Arnie, it is unfair to base your asumption on just one case. *confused*

Elite were a new company with a radical new design of box, and someone had to to the market research? Otherwise it would have died. *confused*

Any new product cannot be perfectly suitable without testing and what better way to test this than real racing?

I am sure quaife has spent many a time on research before the end product is reliable. *thumbup*

It is easy to knock a english engineering supplier who is trying to promote thier product. *thumbdown*

Where would we be if people did not bother??

I am sure that the Elite box will be sorted after efforts of willing people who are commited to product development. *idea*

Thanks for your comments chaps *thumbup* Personally, as a potential customer, I would prefer not to finance product development!

Actualy, that's now three people I know of that have had problems with the Elite box *eek*

I also notice from various photographs, that the Elite box uses cables as part of the change mechanism.

I think you can see, that if I have to make a choice in the future, I'm starting to sway towards the Quaife product.

It's a big weight saving with the Elite box, but I would prefer reliability *wink*

In the meantime, thanks for the tip Peter, I'll be keeping my eye on developments at R&R *thumbup*
