Andrew Russell
I am having an intermitent problem with the starter motor on my 16v 2.0 XE Vauxhall engined car. Every few starts, the motor spins but does not engage on the flywheel and simply revs away. On the next attempt it will connect and the engine fires up. I haven't taken the motor off yet but wonder if anyone has any ideas as to cause/remedy of this. Is it just a case of too much heat having seized a component or is it more a case of an internal failure? Any ideas what starter motor is sourced from? Thanks, Andrew. CHRIS CLARK
Andrew, Not sure if the V/X unit is pre-engaged or a "spin up" bendix type. The usual problem is dirt around the shaft that prevents the gear from throwing in correctly. I've had the prob before on MG B GT's etc and removal, clean up & a light spray of lube (NOT grease) usually sorts it. Good luck.
Andrew Russell
Thanks Chris, the Vauxhall is a pre-engaged type and I have never tinkered with one before. I've experienced the sticking Bendix before on other cars and I'm hoping the fix is equally as easy and cheap! Andrew
