LSD wanted

Good question,

The Quaife works on the principle of epicyclic gears and the resistance they produce in the reverse motion, the ZF and Tran X versions work in a similar way to a multiplate clutch pack with the drive shafts connected to the friction plates and the crown wheel bolted to the clutch plate (flywheel and cover in a conventional clutch arrangement)

The pressure exerted on the friction disc is governed in 2 ways:

firstly there is a static preload applied to the friction disc via the cover plates usually somewhere between 25-50 lbs ft, and secondly rollers and ramps are employed within the construction so that i operation the crown wheel turns rollers which act upon ramps effectively increasing the pressure on the friction disc in a 'squeezing' manor thus preventing slippage.

By altering the angle of these ramps and the preload the characteristic of the LSD can be tuned to a particular application, one crit of the std ZF is that the preload is too high for a 7, hence on overrun the LSD preload resistance is too high for a lightweight car to overcmoe and this can induce understeer on turn in.

I known Phil tweaks the ZF for 7 applications, the Tran X can be built to customer requiremtns in the same manor.

Bit wordy but hope it helps *confused*
