Hub nut.... how tight?

You don't torque the hub nut. It should be tight enough to enable the wheel to turn freely, and to allow you to be able to fit the split pin. From memory, there should be up to 1/16 inch movement on the wheeel when the nut is tightened. You will find that in one place the pin will go through and the wheel will turn ok, if you tighten it anymore the wheel will bind.

If you can't find the happy medium, you may need to change the wheel bearings.

LOOKING AT THE LAST POST YOU MUST HAVE A AXLE WITH TAPERED BEARINGS IN THIS CASE IF YOU OVER TIGHTEN THE NUT YOU WILL OVERLOAD THE BEARINGS TAKE THE NUT UP TILL JUST TIGHT THEN SLACKEN BACK TILL YOUR WHEEL IS FREE AND YOU MAY HAVE JUST A LITTLE END FLOAT IN THE BEARING BETTER TO HAVE A LITTLE THAN TO TIGHT
