CharlesElliott
How do you do this? Specifically, how do you remove the old bearings from the bearing carrier? rj
Charles, I reckon a punch will do it with a bit of patience (and a big hammer) /regin
Rob Walker
The proper way it to use a bearing press. If you do not have access then a steel drift and a small 1/2lb hammer and tap the bearing from the housing.
CharlesElliott
OK, I have access to a bearing press when needed (Trevor, where are you? 😬) Charles --- My SuperGraduates 2006 diary My SuperGraduates 2005 diary, My Caterham Academy 2004 build and race diary
CharlesElliott
Do you have to replace the rubber seals on the carrier? Harry Flatters
Charles, I know budget may be an issue but you can buy the hub carriers already made up with new bearings (got mine from Redline in Caterham). What extra it costs I would say you save in agg swapping the bearings over. *arrowright*Harry Flatters *arrowright* AKA Steve Mell - Surrey AO and Su77on Se7ener
CharlesElliott
Steve - no, I agree, new carriers with bearings are £44+VAT. I'm trying to work out whether I should just return the replacement bearings I bought to replace the ones in the old carriers, before I realised that they were bent. Roger Ford
£60+VAT now. Does this advice still apply? Was going to replace my rear bearings (as I'm replacing disks) - not sure if I want to spend an extra 80-odd quid. Do the carriers wear out (ie. would I get extra benefit from replacing the whole assembly), or is this simply a saving of hassle? CharlesElliott
I have found that the carriers do warp (when they get smacked in a collision that is). You often don't notice at the time. Personally, the rear bearings/carriers are on the list of things that I replace every season. And the rear bearings on their own aren't cheap. Roger Ford
Guess I should do them - but £140 on top of the £250 I spent on pads and discs is pretty painful. Maybe I should leave the whole lot until after Spa.
