I would think that the Mk2 Escort RS 6" wheels shouldn't be too far away and will work without problem as should most of the used RWD escort wheels that are around the Competition car breakers.

Some of the Capris used a 6" wheel that looks the same as the Escort but uses different washers on the sleeve nuts. I would avoid mixing them.

I think the only 6" steels around would be Wellers and there isn't too much choice of offset but any RWD application should be reasonable. The Mk 1 Mexico, Lotus Cortina wheels would fit but they are 5.5. The offset would be OK if they are wide enough.

Don't buy any Fiesta RS alloys they are FWD compatible and have completely the wrong offset. If you look at any FWD wheel (except 10" Mini) the hub and rim are more or less in the same plane.

6.0x13 et+23 p.c.d/bore4x108.0/67.1mm front

7.0x13 et+24 p.c.b/bore4x108.0/63.5mm rear

and a lovely set they are better than the super****e ones

I sent Caterham an email this morning asking for the offsets for their 13",14",15" and 16" wheels for

Their reply was.."Thank you for your email. Unfortunately, I have been advised by our Engineering department that this information is confidential manufacturing data and not for external release. Therefore, I am unable to give you details of the wheel offsets."

Fat lot of good that was!

So,does anyone have the offset details for Caterham's 13,14,15 and 16 inch wheels?

Thanks Barry,you're an Angel smile.gif

What I'm interested in is if the standard +23 offset decreases to allow for clearance on the inside edge of the wheel as the rim diameter goes up and the rim width increases.

Most of the wheel stockists I have been in touch with cannot find a 16" wheel with an offset of +23,+20 would be the biggest they could do,+16 seems to be an average.

The information in the build manual for my 1990 car is as follows:-

5 1/2 X 13 wheels 165X13 tyres

6 X 13 wheels 185/70x13 tyres

6 X 14 wheels 185/65x14 tyres

or 185/60x14 tyres

above should have 19mm inset or negative offset.

6 1/2 X 15 wheels 195/50x15 tyres

above should have 13mm negative offset

Note different companies define negative and positive offset differently.

In this case negative offset makes the overall track narrower.

Hmmm, that doesn't make sense, nor does it match with my belief that the standard wheels have an ET of +23??

if the figures above are correct, then the wheels would be sitting much closer to the car than I expected (if you take the negative to mean positive) or they are way outside the edges of the arches (if the negative is true)confused.gif

Offset is the distance from the centerline of the wheel that the mounting face is,well, offset!(positive usually means the mounting face is closer to the outside edge of the wheel than the inner arch,or the axle sticks further out into the arch)if the offset is too large (on the wheel) then the inside edge of the wheel will rub on the inner wing.Conversely,if the wheel has a negative offset, the wheel will stick out too much and will likely stick out beyond the bodywork.

PCD is the Pitch Circle Diameter,i.e the diameter of the imaginary circle that the wheel bolts are on.

Moochas Gracias Mr Reaper. I get it now.

Next question (which may be what the above debate is all about):

How do I know what offset my current wheels are and;

presumably a new set would have to have the same offset or is there a tolerance?

My manual agrees with Ian's!

However it also gives an inset of 19mm for a 16x7 HPC wheel with only the 15x6.5 at 13mm.

I suspect that this is an inexact science. At the rear the wider the track the better provided it doesn't foul the wheel arch. At the front I assume considerations of steering geometry must effectively limit the amount of inset possible.

Hopefully someone who knows what they are talking about will come along soon.

Gary,

Some wheels are marked with the offset, usually as part of the wheel size,e.g. 6J13ET23

where 6=rim width,J=type of rim moulding,13=wheel diameter and ET23=offset.

I was hoping somebody could look at a set of 16" HPC's and see if they are marked in this way.

I am currently emailing Caterham to advise them they have supplied this info in the manuals and that I just want to ensure it is correct.

Simon from Caterham has just replied, and he now says the HPC wheel is marked as 19mm offset,Why couldn't they have said that in the first place? confused.gif
