N Blandin
SWMBO has a 2002 beetle cabrio and the brake light switch seems to have packed up. I have taken it out to replace but now a light (orange) showing EPC has lit up on the dash. Any ideas on what EPC is?
Mick Day
Do a Google with EPC & VW. My best was EPC =Electronic Power Control. However it seems this light has come on for an awful number of VW owners for many (undiagnosed?) reasons. The closest to a your problem is maybe here
Frying Pan
I think this is Electronic Powertrain Control. (engine management) The brake switch is an input to the powertrain controller for things like cruise control cancel. VW also cut the engine power if the brakes are applied with the throttle (no left foot braking!). Fix the brake switch and it should be OK. You may have to have the fault cleared though... Guy See some pictures of the build here. 10000 miles completed!
N Blandin
Thanks guys You are both right. I swapped the switch £6.00 *smile*but had to get the fault cleared £39.00. 😳 And people wonder why we like our "old fashioned" 7's
Pierson
Nigel - just for future reference: The fault code/symptom is cleared (via a dealer) using something called VAG-COM, a diagnostics tool designed to identify computer-logged errors on all VAG cars such as VW, Audi, etc. Many of the forums on the 'Net have members who will have VAG-COM (it's commercially available) who will be happy to reset codes and diagnose any future problems either for free or a lot less than £39.00. It's daylight robbery, isn't it? Maybe check out some VW/Beetle sites and do a search for VAG-COM - I'm sure you'll find someone close to you who is willing to help should you ever hit a similar issue. Cheers, Pierson
rj
I've got the VAG-COM interface. Anyone is of course most welcome to make me bring it to your shores to abuse it whilst I'm in England, which only seems to happen once a month in average 😳 /regin
