Alternative Engine

Thinking about more for less!

Could a reclaimed engine from a front wheel drive Rover (1.8 VVC) be fitted to a 1.4 K series '7 ?

Looking for more HP for less money...ie a good engine from a scraped/crashed car.

Question is, what about the Engine mounts..they need to be one each side for a north/south mounted engine.

I figure £2000 for a good engine is better than spending lots more on add on bits!

Opinions ...?...

The basic layout is the same, you will need to make some alterations to the end of the crank to take the spigot bearing, and you will need to use a different flywheel since the VVC one is too large, the block needs some modifcation to fit the Caterham style starter and adaptor and you will need the ECU and immobiliser plus their harnesses. You may also find that depending on vintage, the plenum may be a bit of a tight squeeze under the bonnet and you will need to use the Caterham sump. The existing engine mounts should fit OK. £2000 is a lot for a VVC engine...

since Caterham do a VVC variant and there a a few home installed VVCs out there I cant see it giving any insurmountable problems.

Roland,

The engine mounts are different and a lot of materials seem to be difficult to get hold of I have been mailing with Caterham for a number of times but they don't seem to have a real list of what you need and what you can reuse from you current 1.4 The partnumber from the engine mounts are 72035VVC and 71400VVC.

2000GBP sounds a lot I would estimate that it would be possible to buy one for +/- 1000-1200 I am curious how you getting along with this I tought It would be easy but getting hold of the specific parts seems to be not so easy.

Good luck

I looked into this, but decided not too in the end because Caterham warned me the VVC engine was not ideal for track day use!

However there are a lot of VVC engines available, do a search on the national scrap yard site (can't remember the address), I found two low mileage engines from a specialist Rover scrap yard in Norfolk for a grand each including delivery and VAT.
