Silver 21
As it says above, I'm fitting a Ford Axle to my 'Bird' and need Sierra Rear Calipers but need to know if these are what is fitted to a de dion car as standard or not as I've had a reply to my wanted ad offering a pair of De Dion rear calipers Anyone know the answer 🤔 Graham Lotus 7 Club General Secretary

Normans_Ghost
Graham, the VW Golf callipers are lighter and better than the Sierra. If you're going to buy new give me a shout and I'll sort out a fair sized discount from our VW dealer. ed to ad thet the VW callipers are a lot lighter. Silver 21
Thanks Peter Out of interest I presume the De Dion set up uses the same fixing bracket off the Sierra as well as the sliding section, or do they use a special bracket 🤔 Graham Lotus 7 Club General Secretary
DohNut
Std is ford caliper total Rally design (raldes.co.uk) have the VW caliper bodged to the ford braket/slider. Unsure of clearance under 13inch wheels though N
Silver 21
Norm Thanks for the suggestions, are the VW ones a direct swap for the Sierra Caliper?, ie are they the same offset and bolt spacing. I know it sounds like lots of questions but these are to fit a rebuilt MKII Escort axle with alloy caliper mounting brackets from SPC in Redditch (so not a De Dion set up) Norm as long as the above are the same can you find me a price for a pair or point me in the right direction? Graham Perry
For the VW's the bolt spacing is the same, a couple of washers are needed to match the offset, the handbrake mechanism is similar and will work with the Caterham cable. Only drawback is that on a de-dion they won't work with all 13inch wheels. I have them on my car, but I have the Barnby wheels and have only 4mm clearance, but they should work with all 14inch and above wheels. Earlier thread re these here
I.Mupferit
Graham, have you sorted out the handbrake cable and how that will work since I imagine you have the under dash lever? When I carried out this upgrade on my last car, I used the normal Sierra rear cable which has a loop in the tunnel that is pulled by a secondary cable attached to the lever. You will need to fit additional lugs in the tunnel to accept both cables. Brent 2.3 DURATEC SV Reassuringly Expensive R 417.39 😬
Graham Perry
Handbrake sorted using the original underdash handbrake and original Caterham cable with no real problems
Myles
Just a quick point of interest to future techtalk searches... I purchased a set of exchange calipers from Burtons to replace mine (duff handbrake mechanism). Even though I ordered the correct units (in Sierra terms), the exchange units sit a few mm lower - and the saddle actually rubbed on the edge of the disk. Had to angle-grind it... 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester Racing 7's Equipe™ 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 🙆🏻 Alcester-Racing-Sevens.com

Normans_Ghost
The 13" wheel problem is only half a problem. I borrowed 2 13" wheels, one went over and the other didn't. However the one that that didn't only need a few mill grinding of the ali cooling fins. I'll email the dealer in the morning and get some prices.
