Pierre Gillet
Would it be a good idea to rivnut the scuttle instead of pop rivet it back ? cheers, Pierre
k.russell
not sure you mean the same thing Pierre but the two big rivets at the lower rear of the scuttle, either side, i have replaced with rivnuts in the chassis and small csk bolts in shaped washer, the type you see on motorcycle fairings, this works well, think the later cars didnt have this large rivet though, i have also fitted the two tonneau poppers in the front centre with small rivnuts as these fit throught the scuttle and into the top tube underneath. kev. kevin R black-ali HPC
Unclefester
Yeah...I noticed that the SV's seem to have a normal sized rivet, not that huge thing as on the original cars. NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
Pierre Gillet
Thanks Gents. I have fitted 24 or so rivnuts to attach the scuttle under the bonnet and plan to use M4 hex bolts instead of the pop rivets. Hope it's OK.
Leadership Team Mcalvert Posted June 19, 2006 Leadership Team Share Posted June 19, 2006 Yes, this is exactly what I have done, and at the weekend helped "Crudders" refit his the same way. Mayes removing the scuttle a doddle in the future. Regards - Michael.
Ferrino
Yes it's a good idea - I have done this too (used some nice M4 stainless buttonheads). I hate drilling out and replacing rivets - it makes lifting off the scuttle for electrical jobs much easier.
Unclefester
Are there 24 rivets holding the scuttle on then? I had no idea......never having removed one... *eek* NICE PLATE!!! 😬 😬here *eek*
elie boone
Pierre, And your next post will be : i have a rattle where does it come from it "ll be your scuttle 😬
k.russell
Pierre, when i take off my scuttle, i take off the whole front bulkhead also, this involves undoing just the four bolts to the chassis side the two steering columb bolts and the two rivets i've mentioned, thought that is how everyone did it kevin R black-ali HPC
jerrypike
elie i use rubber grommets in the alloy when bolting it to rivnuts: stops rattles, cracks and looks ok with hemispherical head hex drive bolts jerry
Ferrino
Lifting the entire scuttle off (ie. the arched bit + the bulkhead) is not convenient for everyone, as the bulkhead usually has a bead of sealant where it meets the horizontal panel and people attach electrical gubbins to the inside of the bulkhead (like control boxes, ECU, fusebox etc....) which cannot be detached from car. Pierre Gillet
Elie, you come too late, the damage is done 😳 here @Jerrry: grommet , a kind of rubber washer ? Cheers, Pierre
jerrypike
pierre rubber washer but with a waist so it stays in the sheet metal and cushions both sides- lubricate when fitting so you're not tempted to overdrill jerry
