Oil -to-Air or Oil-to-Water ?

Baby Bucket

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

At the moment I run an air-to-oil cooler on Baby B (as part of the dry sump system). I was thinking of fitting an oil thermostat rather than having to cover-up the oil cooler when the days are cooler.

As an alternative I thought abour replacing the air-to-oil cooler with an oil-to-water cooler. My thinking that this will warm the oil quicker, won't be stuck in the airflow for the radiator and will have consistent temperatures across the engine.

Any thoughts or suggestions ? If you have done this, which cooler did you use and where was it located ?

Thanks,

Peter

A whole batch of Caterham and Elise owners have just bought and installed the Laminova oil/water heat exchanger kit from Think Automotive on a bulk buy.. you missed out there, unless it's still alive.

I've run with one of these for some time and cant praise them highly enough, although mine isnt a Laminova, the principle is identical and it warms the oil up rapidly and keeps it at a consistent temperature.

The particular cooler was arrived at after many calculations involving a thermal engineer, if you ring Think they will give full details, there are pictures of the installation on V7 SLR here.
