engine temp

Recommended Posts

Using the Caterham supplied stat (74 degrees), fan switch (84 degrees) and overflow bottle my three x-flows ran normally at 78 degrees on the open road rising when in town or traffic. I fitted a manual fan switch which not only kept the water temp below 80 but also cooled the alternator and prevented the constant failures I suffered. On one occasion on a very hot day (mid 30's) the water temp made the high 80's regardless of fan etc when cruising on the M1 with no problems or water loss. When I had temp fluctuation problems (75 - 85) it was traced to the cooling system being presurised by a failing head gasket.

PS I did not run a heater.

In decent weather mine runs at around 80. the fan kicks in at 90+ a bit but I have put an over ride switch as I dont trust the auto switch. This is useful if you can see heavy traffic, like coming back from Le Mans in 2000 when the ambient was 30 ish. You can avoid the temp build up in advance.
