Crossflow Weber meltdown

Last week I reported that my crossflow was revving at about 4000rpm on ‘idle’ following a routine service and oil change. The revs dropped of their own accord but the idling was very lumpy. The electrics were all good so I checked the carbs (DCOE 40’s), I took off the K&N filters and removed the stainless steel venturi. I then removed the inner alloy liners from within the inlet passage to find that the centre tube within the liners had completely melted! This was on 3 & 4 cylinders, 1& 2 being OK. There is no other apparent damage to the carb, but there has clearly been some form of blow back or other local overheating. The liners can be replaced, but does anyone know what would cause this problem and why? TerryF
