Diff centres

A friend of mine has an Escort Mk 1 fitted with a 2 litre engine producing around 190 hp. He has a Quaiffe lsd fitted to the axle but has problems with bolts coming loose on the crown wheel. Can anyone suggest a fix , or, another diff that has proven to be more trustworthy. Car is used for Historic Rally and occasional circuit.

I have about the same spec. in my RS2000 but I don't have a problem with bolts coming loose. I do use a Tran-x LSD but it shouldn't make any difference. Try new bolts and loctite it should be ok.

It might be worth checking that everything is "square" before you torque it all up.

This is a known problem with Quaiffe LSDs for the English diff. The bolt heads just contact on the diff casing causing them to undo. You will need to fettle the bolt heads slightly to eliminate it or dremmel the case slightly in the offending area. Speak to Phil Stewart at Road and Race Transmissions for more info. 01959 525105

Elie,

I don't believe that ZF make a diff for the English axle.

Tran-X make their own design and have bought the manufacturing rights to the Salisbury unit.

I think the progressive unit is their own design, which I have used and found quite reliable.

I have managed to find one of the back brake plates and will dig out the other this weekend. (Been trying to finish the Escort for next month!)
