Adrian Williams
I'm toying with the idea of removing the standard exhaust system on my 1996 1600 super sport and replacing with a Caterham 4 into 1 and non cat silencer. If I go for a 5" silencer will that be too loud for some track days (Goodwood / Castle Coombe) or do I need to choose a 6" job. Last time it was tested using the standard system the reading was 97db @ 4500rpm any idea what a 4 into 1 with 5" or 6" will read?
Blatman
I'd go with a 6" or even 7". That should help if (when!) noise levels get reduced furthersad.gif
Tony Martyr
I had to use a 6 inch to get the sort of figures you quote with the same modification - do not use 5 inch

Area Representative Tin Man Posted January 29, 2002 Area Representative Share Posted January 29, 2002 I have just changed mine to the 4:2:1 SLR system with no cat. I went with the std 6" & the noise does not seem to be a problem. If you go for the 6" you will need to order a guard which is another £25.00!! yankeedoodoo
Is there a "final and official opinion/set of facts" regarding whether 5", 6" or 7" can is quieter? Proud to be loud but need to comply with competition decibel (93) requirements.
Tight fart
If your going to do track days buy the 7" T.F@O.F
Adrian Williams
Thanks for your help everyone, it looks like a 5" is a non starter.
Mick Day
I bought the Caterham 4:2:1 with 6" silencer. It is quieter than the original because most of the stuffing had blown out of the original over the past 7 years! No doubt this will happen with this one in time. My kit included a black guard which I haven't fitted. If anyone wants one email me off line. Mick
