Whistling Flywheel & noisy idle - K Series

RobM

Recommended Posts

On my 1.8 K series VVC. Anyone had this before? Are they supposed to do it?

Also, in neutral with the clutch out my car makes a 'nah nahi nah nahi' sort of noise. Has anyone any experience of that? Someone told me that 'they all do it', its very loud, is that right?

Any help greatly appreciated.

assuming the Nah Nah? noise goes away when you depress the clutch it is caused by a worn Thrust Release Bearing they can make a lot of noise and seem to last anyway to replace they are only about £12 but it's an Engine/gearbox out job

I suspect the whistling is the same thing as the Thrust Bearing is located in the bellhousing along with the flywheel

Rob, new heard of a whistling flywheel... there is nothing there to make it whistle - most likely that the sound is coming from the clutch thrust bearing.

When you say "clutch out", do you mean disengaged i.e. pedal depressed, and do the sounds you are picking up only happen in neautral or also when you are in gear?

Mine makes a nah nah noise which sounds like yours, it too goes in when the clutch is depressed. I think Mark's probably right about the clutch release bearing but I cant get worked up enough to do anything about mine.

I do seem to recall a thread about an idler gear (I think thats what it was) which could sound similar although I doubt if I could find it now.

Does sound suspiciously like the input shaft rumble that lot's of type 9's suffer with. My straight cut 'box sounds like it has a small man with a large hammer inside it, until I press the clutch pedal.............

My Vx engined/type 9 equipped car (a different one to the straight cut 'box equipped car) has a suspicious squeaking/loud whistling coming from the clutch release bearing (I assume) which disappears at the slightest touch of the clutch pedal, and is only apparent when cold. I suspect some sort of contamination which alters it properties when warm, or expansion of the CRB itself renders it silent..........Either way, I'm not taking the engine and 'box out until absolutely necessary, ie not until I'm brought home from a far flung corner of the country on a flat bed........

Does Blatgirl know about your preferred mode of transport when you're in "hic" mode 🤔 *confused*

Light weight flywheels can create this 'clonking' sound and accentuates the first motion shaft rattling (they all do that Sir). Usually goes away when you press the clutch pedal, yes? How many of us get embarrassed at traffic lights & do this anyway?

Nothing to really worry about I'd guess. After I'd fitted a newly overhauled six speed (in place of the 5), new lightened, balanced flywheel & new release bearing I was hoping it'd be quieter than the original set-up. Wrong!

Answer? Live with it!!!

I concurr they all do it at tickover mine sounds like all the big ends are shot it rattles like a scrapper[shut up you in the back] once I depress the clutch it all goes quiet and very smooth. Light f/wheel, comp clutch, and new thrust bearing.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The whistling is coming from around the flywheel area, so its not outof the question that it could be a release bearing. If it is, does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to get it sorted? The car only does it with a warm engine.

The nah nah nah nah ha ha sound is only with the clutch undepressed (ie feet off everything), and in neutral. It goes away when you press the clutch pedal down.

Any more clues? Thanks for any replies BTW. very helpful.

my 4speed crossflow makes a noise like a bag of spanners with the clutch depressed, so changing gear at higher engine speeds it sounds like a very feisty dump valve releasing. At idle at the lights I put it in nuetral to shut it up. The car has a very light flighwheel and a rather on/off style clutch. I thought this was the clutch release bearing - but it sounds as though others do it too.
