shn7
Currently got a std 4 - 1 inside the car K series exhaust which has now developed a crack at the join between the pipe and the catalyst . So I'm considering the options and need to know what these are and associated costs. Opinions/comments please. In the short term I'm hoping to get a friend to weld it up to keep me on the road. tricky dicky
Steve depends on your budget and engine ie 1.8 or 1.6. I have just been thru this process and found the following from various threads. If 1.6k then could replace 4:1 Cat with 4:1 Super Sports system with longer primaries meeting outside the body- Cost upwards £500 new from CC or £300-350 second hand- but quite rare to come up on Blatchat. Need to cut out side skin and poss raise engine on nearside to get old manifold off. This option means you loose the Cat - may be an issue at MOT time. If 1.8k then recommended route (DVA etc) is 4:2:1 this has apparently helped engine to produce better torque and is better suited to 1.8 character. If you opt for a VHPD system from Caterham then you have option to fit a Cat and vary size of silencer, ie 6" or 7". I got a price of £595 plus Vat from CC for a non Cat VHPD system and a price of c. £820 to include a Cat in the above.(inc 6" silencer) Need to modify side skin in the same way as described above. The primaries on each system are seperate and can be a bit fiddly to fit. Other options are Powerspeed (recent bulk buy) and Exhaust by Design. Think that these are around £600 mark from memory. Alcester Sevens (Myles) has a good summary on his site of fitting a 4:1 on a 1.6K. REgards Rich
shn7
Rich, Thanks for that. Budget is a factor most certainly. It's a 1.8 and as you've said DVA recommended 4 - 2 - 1 while I was there yesterday. That was when I noticed the problem. Time to post a wanted ad and see what comes up me thinks. Steve. martinwhitcher
powerspeed for the exhaust, about £600 full system Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.171 now know as:Superlight DVA
tricky dicky
Good luck on the wanted, I concluded these were rarer than half doors! They never seem to come up. The bits are available seperately from CC. The primaries are around £100 each, the collector another £200 and the silencer c. £250 if purchased seperately. Might be worth getting primaries and looking out for 2nd hand collector and a silencer - these seem to appear more often. Rich
Bafty Crastard
I guess it’s a SS exhaust so there won’t be much deterioration, you should be able to fine weld the crack and save some money The R300 NUT'errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
martinwhitcher
No he said that the exhaust joins inside the car which is poo!! get a 4-2-1 which has longer primaries that joins outside the car Martin MW 51 CAT Superlight No.171 now know as:Superlight DVA
shn7
Bafty, That's one option that I have in mind. But then something breaking is always an upgrade opportunity isn't it 😬 Steve.
shn7
Martin, That's the aim but within a tight budget. Steve.
pb
Beware of the poor quality of some after market systems (non CC supplied) i.e. poor welding, baffles falling out, and look very shabby after about 6 months. I even seen the primaries flattened to fit under the diagonal PB
Bafty Crastard
Ok ok…..then go for the Cheesman R300 type and match that up at around £600 ☹️ The R300 NUt'errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

pb
Steve, Your cheapest option would be to source via Blatchat a Caterham 4-1 competition system for around £200-300. The Caterham 4-2-1 rarely appear for sale here. As I stated I have seen some very poor after market systems, although though I have to say the Raceco silencers look a quality product and I'm sure there are others.
