Stupid question on refitting gear knob

This afternoon I fitted a new leather prop shaft cover to replace the old damaged one. To do this requires the removal of the gear knob that has a small allen screw in it, which I undid. When I removed the gear knob, the six speed gear indications were at 12 o'clock. It was very very tight to undo and I used my wife's kitchen bottle top removal tool to undo it. Now the new cover is in, but when i tighten up the gear knob, it only goes to 10 o'clock. So I am doing something stupidly wrong or was there something in the gear knob to limit it. Not having the gear indications at 12 o'clock looks all wrong.

I should have added that it is the metal Caterham 6 speed gear knob.

Have you checked the forward lower face of the knob as there is likely to have been the smallest Allen Key grub screw securing the knob in the correct orientation.  This should be loosened off before attempting removal.

Is there more than one grub screw?

It is not clear to me, but if you did get the grub screw out before you removed the knob, you may need to put something (e.g. a fiber washer or two) into the head of the knob aperture so that it does not screw as far onto the stick as at present (1 rotation less) and then use you grub to fix it in the 12 o'clock.

Yes, the single grub screw was taken out before I unscrewed the gear knob. I'll try some fiber washers tomorrow. It may well have had something inside the knob that fell out, but I did not see anything. Thanks for the information.

Just position gear knob correctly and then tighten grub screw, no need to fully tighten gear knob as grub screw should keep it in intended position
