AMMO
I have just taken delivery of a Radec ali radiator for my Duratec conversion (another three kilos bites the dust!). It has what looks like an M20 tapped boss to take a fan switch. I assume this would be a Rover one. Any ideas of what temperatures these switches are available in? Any part numbers? Are the Rover switches reliable? I was hoping to get something that kicks in at around 90 degrees C. I am going to use the ECU to control the electrically heated thermostat on the engine. This means I cannot use the ECU to control the fan. Thanks AMMO
Support Team Shaun_E Posted February 9, 2004 Support Team Share Posted February 9, 2004 Ammo, The fan switch is available from Caterham and is only about £10. They don't have a reputation for being reliable so when I got my Radtec I bought a new one to be on the safe side. They come on at somewhere near 100 deg C - not sure of the exact temperature. When fitting the new thermostat, I had trouble screwing it in and thought I had the wrong one but it turned out that it was just the thread in the radiator needed cleaning out a bit. RiF
Hi Ammo, I tried mine in the radiator and found with my set-up the corner of the rad did not heat up enough so fan did not cut on until 100 degrees. Put mine in the Raceline water rail and it started working at 87 degrees. Was told the Caterham one is not reliable but the VW one part no 823959481F is. 87 to 90 degrees on. AMMO
Richard Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. This is the answer I wanted. You have saved me a lot of time trying to get this information. Cheers. Shaun_E that would have been the easy option but I have a certain reluctance to put anything on my car that has anything to do with Rover (VW is OK). Rover is a dog's name 😬 😬 😬 AMMO

Dobuy
AMMO, Same as Richard, Raceline supplied me with a VW one, spoke to Peter@Raceline about it as I wanted to fit it in the radiator to save extending the wiring for the fitment in the Water-rail. Peter said that in his experience you could sometimes not get as accurate a temp reading in the radiator, hence the fitment in the water-rail. They also supplied a copper plug to blank off the hole in the radiator. Oh yeah and the Rover one is crap, VW is a straight replacement. Duratec Se7en, now being built, pictures here! RiF
Racelines experiences are ME , yes I was the mug that had to try it in the radiator (Peters sugestion) and have the temp go through the roof Also I was the one who was told to change the cr*ppy Rover one for a VW so it would all work correctly after faulty readings!!!!!!!!! The joys of being the first 😬 Glad to be of help Ammo. AMMO
Nifty Well I thought that whilst you were picking up your gearbox you might like to pick my one up as well. Please... pretty please (back-pedalling wildly). Spoke to Chris at BGH. He says the whole box with bellhousing and Quaife case is around 30/31 kilos. Originally 44 kilos when I bought the car. 😬 Regarding fan switches, it makes sense to place it as close to the head as possible. I made my own plumbing for the Zetec and placed a fan switch in an ali tube close to the rad. The fan never came on so installed a toggle switch on the dash. I will look at putting a switch in the back of the Duratec head in the coolant outlet. AMMO
Nifty
Ammo, Will be going down on Saturday (bloody early to beat the traffic). Have to collect mine, yours and Bens 'box and diff. Give me a ring regarding liasing on the way back to drop it off *thumbup* Nifty P.S. I may consider forgiving you in return for one of those luciously light exhausts *tongue* 😬 😬 (Took mine to Jason's to have the tailpipe crack welded up...bloody hell it's heavy with the cat in there!!) AMMO
Nifty Could you please drop the gearbox off at Mark Hicks' unless you want to pop over to Woodbridge for a drink on the way home. I'll give you a call later. Thanks AMMO
