MFRU info

Recent discussions have highlighted that the relays in the MFU (Multi-function-Relay-Unit) can cause problems as they spark errode themselves - we had this very problem which has been documented elsewhere. Should you need to get a new one of these boxes, you will have problems if you go to Rover dealers! I tried 3 dealers - Slough, Hales and Uxbridge. Mention Caterham and they go blank. The biggest dealer at Uxbridge had no idea what a Caterham was, or that there was this new tie up between Rover and Caterham. Anyway, I finally got the part from caterham, therefore paying more, but at least it is right.

 

Here are the part numbers, or at least the ID number on the part itself - if you have these it will be easier at a Rover dealer - although again they had no idea what EU2/EU3 was.

 

EU2 loom - YWB 10022-F

EU3 loom - YWB 100970

 

The problem is that the 2 MFU's are different, Rover dealers only tried to sell me the newer model EU3 MFU, despite me telling me them the early year of our car (95)

aha! good info. I think that's the sort of thing thats meant to go in 7faq.com...

 

Rover dealers are generally utterly clueless without a part number. I wanted the roll pins for the camshaft (that drives the dizzy) - they are very simple, only used on EU2 Ks and come in VVC and normal types. THe people I rang came out with "I'm not trained to help you then, with a part number I' can find out in 30 minutes though". Luckily Mav knew a dealer with an older more sensible chap and he got the answer in about 30 seconds...

 

What happened to people doing jobs they were good at and taking some pride in doing them properly 🤔 These days it seems every job is automated so that anybody can do it as long as nothing interesting gets asked. Why shoud anybody be expected to do the job - get somebody with some aptitude / enjoyment for the job

Having been in, and accosiated with,the motor trade for 42 years I watched with amusement when about 20 years ago manufacturers introduced computerised parts systems (parts catalogoues not the management systems) with the aim of "de-skilling" the job. This has led to dealers believing thay can employ anyone in the parts department and, with no training, the computer will find the part numbers they need. Hence the problem.

 

The worrying thing is this process is starting in the workshop now. Audi A8's must be plugged into a network with vidio link to a technical team in Germany who will diagnose and instruct the "technician" what to do.

 

I'll stick to my old cars and repair/service them myself.
