Luke Harnesses - swapping buckle over

Recommended Posts

Ages ago I recollect seeing a thread about swapping the buckle over on the Luke/Caterham harnesses so that the passenger one isn't flung into the ali skin on the passenger side each time they get out but onto the tunnel instead.

Can't find it now on a search.

Anyone done it?

Easy?

Safe?

Any tiny springs that fly off as soon as you undo the set-screws in the back?

the troble you will encounter is that the buckle is designed for the left side, what you have is the pointed release facing down. If you change sides it will stick in your stomach in the event of a accident, and the buckle has 4 inputs that line up crutch, strap right, shoulder right then shoulder left. if you was to turn it round they would not line up correctly.

I know as this is how i had my car when i built it, took it for SVA and they highlighted it to me and i HAD to change it back round...Doh!(caterham missed it, or didn't know?! on the post build check).

Have a look

I thought that the buckle on the Luke harnesses was symmetrical.

I swapped my passenger buckel over - It 's quite simple with no springs to fly off any where but best done off the car on a table top.

From memory you have to remove the screw under the label on the release lever & then remove the screws from the top plate. Once inside you can swap over the pivot pin that holds the permenate strap into the buckle to the over side.

Sorry if this is a bit vauge but it was a long time ago.

Er, that's not right (Martin).

You can remove the release lever and position it wherever you want. I have both of mine set to point horizontally to avoid the pointy end sticking into any part of you.

To do the whole job properly you have to remove the buckle's back plate. Here you'll see 5 pins. Open up the buckle further and you'll see that only 4 of the pins are "driven". One pin is that which is permanently affixed to one strap. You can change which one of those pins remains "undriven" easily. You'll see when you get in there.

You must keep the orientation of the buckle the same as in the original installation because the 5 pins are not arrange equidistantly. I used to force myself to use my crotch strap at all times by having that permanently fixed to the buckle, but it became too much of a PIA to continue with. Now both of my inner lap straps are the buckle straps and the release arm/lever points safely to the side.

Would confirm that the Luke harness can have the buckle swapped reasonably easily, and it is symmetrical. Just be very careful with the springs inside. Aligning these before putting the plate back on is trickyish. Recommend a well lit kitchen. Also remember to loctite the screws. After doing this job I wrote to Luke and was sent some new centre stickers gratis. You can do it!!!

Get a grip boys. What Martin was suggesting was to just swop the two lap straps from one side to the other. He's right that this wouldn't work for the reasons he says.

But you're all right too that you can leave the lap straps fitted and move the buckle from always attached to the left lap strap to always attached to the centre strap, left for drivers side and right for the passenger side.

Clear as mud......
