Big Brother
Does anybody know if there any legal restrictions on the maximum allowable noise from a modified road car (Seven)? I know of the various limits imposed on circuits/airfields etc but what about the public road? I have never seen a noise meter in an MOT station. Just a thought wink.gif Steve Emission Internet
stevefoster
Er don't give any legislators ideas here! I normally pootle in to the station and out again... Below 3000 rpm my car is quietish. Above that it barks and howls.. lovely.
Geoff Johnson
I believe that you have to have an exhaust suitable for the type of car........good in a caterham innit. Don't quote me in court though Geoff
rynicolson
I imagine cars follow the same legal requirement as bikes, which is (I think) 96 db for road and (again I think) 105 on track, though for this there are obvious dispensations (F1!)... TravellinMan
As far as I'm aware there are no limits posed for cars. When was the last time anyone got tested in a tin-top?! I would guess, if it's VERY noisy, the tester might be less inclined to be generous. Travellin' Man Tony Boyd 97,000 miles in 6 years!
sparkey
There definately are legal limits for road cars and if you build your 7 and put it through an SVA the noise level will be checked. The limit, I believe is 96 at 3000 revs, but I'll check and confirm. The good thing is that once you've got your SVA you can do what you like, as they don't test it in the MOT. L777 CMB
Guys, for information the homologated drive by noise level for M1 passemger cars in Europe is 74dB(A) -- this is an aggregate result from 2 runs in 2nd and 3rd gear under full load in both directions. It has to be conducted on a homologated track. If a Caterham is SVA'd it must pass this test.
Graham Sewell
Thank goodness for Q plates - none of this sort of hassle....
Eugene
So I guess my 121dB(A) is a tad loud then? sounds great though... especially when on full revs and overtaking. I get a lovely overrun too, with flames. Sad I know, but it makes yet another difference to other forms of transport. Small Boy - with Big Toy! Geoff Johnson
I love those flames, mine used to before the ECU change, especially in the dark when you light up the side of the road smile.gif Geoff
Big Brother
Do any "regulars" at the Phoenix have access to a noise level meter as I would love to measure my cars dB level. I know its not 121dB though!...but I do get the odd flame at night teeth.gifteeth.gifteeth.gifteeth.gif Steve Emission Internet
philwaters
Hi Steve, I'm a regular at the Phoenix and am thinking of getting a cheep sound meter from Maplin (50 quid I think) in order to fine tune my home cinema/Hi-fi and of course check out how loud my car is. I just need the time to get to the shops... maybe this Saturday. If I do manage to get it I will bring it along to the Wednesday meet next week (11th) and you would be welcome to test your car - same goes to all who turn up...Haven't got it yet though!! Mike Bees
"It has to be conducted on a homologated track. If a Caterham is SVA'd it must pass this test." - SVA does not involve a drive-by test on an homologated track, just a static test (which is rather more lenient than the homologation rules). Eric McLoughlin
I was at last Thurday's Phoenix meeting and you didn't need a noise meter to come to the conclusion that Eugene's 7 was in the LOUD category. I think the Phoenix lost some of their windows as he drove off. Eugene, if you're ever thinking of doimg a Goodwood track day, dont bother. The circuit sensors will probably pick your car up somewhere around Haslemere.

stevefoster
Phil came round this afternoon with a newly purchased noise meter. 1st the shouting an whistling gave max 105 dB(a) 2nd Musical fidelity stereo with Monitor Audio silver 9i speakers at max half volume (never take a hifi higher!) gave 98.2 dB(a) (used the Wall the bit where he smashing things up for this...) 3rd Static 2.0L XE on twin 45's at 4500rpm and 0.5 gave 101.3 dB(a). 4th Drive by at 3m range and 6000 rpm exhaust side and side exit gave 108.1 dB(a) 5th Drive by at 10m range on carbs side at nearly 6000 rpm gave 99.1 dB(a) "Sounded very nice" Phil. Exhaust is standard Caterham 4-1, 5" after 4 years 9000 mile use! Oh and a loose baffle or something like that for good measure! Drove home in T-shirt & shorts in the same downpour that delayed Wimbledon nearly all afternoon! We got wet esp side of shirts / upper arms (aeros only and minimal weather protection). My cap and Bloc wrap arounds did better than Phil's John Lenon style shades! The water was running off him as I stole a sideways look through the stair rods! He was laughing uncontrollably having just bought a set of aeros.....awaiting fitment.... It was warm rain at least!
excess baggage
What are the local noise abatement society, and indeed the guvnor of the Phoenix going to say about you lot screaming up and down the road at 6ooo rpm ? Most of my neighbours don't talk to me, and i've only got one car!
philwaters
Thought had crossed my mind... I will suggest we travel up the section of empty road away from the pub to do any test other than idle checks....
